Microsoft has patched a Windows Vista bug that can corrupt an iPod when you use the 'Safely Remove Hardware' feature or disconnect the iPod using Windows Explorer.

The release is for users worldwide and works with the latest version of Apple iTunes to correct an issue that caused some iPods to become corrupted when ejecting them using Windows Explorer or the "Safely Remove Hardware" function in the System Tray.

Well it's about time. All this time I thought it was an iPod driver bug. Sorry Apple. Wait, no I'm not sorry, your product still performs like shit but I love my iPod so I must deal with it. Either way, this is good news.

getting a "this update does not apply to your system" message, even though I'm running vista x86 with correct patch and use an ipod. Hmm?!?!?

It was an apple problem. Microsoft just got tired of getting blamed for it. Issue didn't occur if you weren't using iTUNES.

Well, the issue didn't occur if you used iTunes to detach your iPod, but rather used the Windows "Safely Remove Device" feature. And, for the record, MS came out with the patch a few weeks ago. It just wasn't until now that they were pushing it through Windows Update.

Who knows. I think it's more of a MS problem because I've run into little "issues" with removable USB devices in general where the system would hard lock or blue screen upon removal. Besides it could be iTunes triggering a bug in MS code. In any case, I didn't get a notice for an update. I'll scan again when I get home later. I've been using my iPod in disk mode anyway to avoid any issues (apple workaround).

Everything I've seen suggests that it relates to the ipod appearing to the system as a USB hard drive but not acting like one. In which case, I suppose, it's MS's fault for not coding in anything about ipods or Apple's fault for not having the ipod read like what it is. Take your pick of the blameworthy party.

Maybe Apple could setup and get 64bit Vista drivers out the door so I can use my iPod. What's the hold up?

Whenever it comes to drivers/support for third party software or hardware not being available, it is ultimately the responsibility of that third party to make them available. I have never understood why MICROSOFT has to take the helm to write their OWN driver for a video card, ipod, sound card, chipset, etc.. I consider ANY pre-bundled drivers in an operating system to be a 'bonus' over what I expect to be present. The fact that microsoft did not write their OWN driver (or wrote a poor one) for an iPOD does not negate the fact that APPLE SHOULD HAVE. I mean, at the very least, they had -14 MONTHS- to get one done.
The other thing to realize is apple is FAR MORE CLOSED than microsoft is. Perhaps the reason that microsoft didn't get a "proper driver" is because APPLE WOULDN'T COOPERATE. That's the gist of this article.. "Apple is now cooperating with microsoft, so.. surprise surprise.. shit actually works now!"

You are basically asking microsoft to do technical support for apple's own product, but letting apple off the hook to have to support THEIR product.

Why?
Well.. lets see
Which driver is better

Microsoft's Generic Radeon driver, that "sure, it works, but it doesn't do much"
-or-
ATI's current catalyst driver?

People have taken for granted that microsoft pre-bundles stuff.

This is the same microsoft that gets in trouble for bundling stuff, such as including a browser which integrates into their operating system...
Damned if they Do.. Damned if they Don't.

What exactly is wrong with your iPod and 64 bit? I run Vista 64 bit and my iPods work fine in Vista64.

As far as who's fault it is, it actually is Microsoft's. There is a known issue in Vista with regards to USB HID and removable devices becoming corrupt. This is not limited to just iPods, its just more "buzz worthy" to slam Apple. :)
