microsoft licenscing

so i got xp media center from a friend. burned copy. surprise surprise, when booting, it didnt work. so i threw in my xp home cd and the computer booted right up. well, the edition is licensced on my dads computer already, but i need an operating system, and its just a screw around computer, so i dont want to spend 70 bucks or so to buy a full os. is there any way that you guys have come across that gets around licenscing, cracks or anything for windows, any info is more than helpful. thanks guys!
