microsoft intellitype pro volume control issues

anyone familiar with microsoft wireless multimedia keyboard 1.0A? i'm having issues with the volume control hot key... the image appears as though it should be affecting volume but nothing happens, the mute doesn't work either. i have the most current drivers/software for it. apparently there have been issues with it but the only solution other sites have had are updating the driver and making sure your you don't plug your speakers in to a usb port. both of which i've done. (it wouldn't be a big deal except i bought the wireless set as a remote for my pc tv tuner)

oh yeah i uninstalled my gateway keyboard software so that shouldn't affect it....

maybe if some one can just tell me of a program that i can control volume through other hotkeys or something... any ideas are great cause i am stumped. thanks
