Microsoft Has Pulled Threshold 2 From Windows Update

You don't understand the younger generation with their delicate egos that have been protected from all the bad meanies all their lives.

Facts are now considered hate speech if they make the poor snowflakes feel bad.

The windows white knight defender squad had been out in force since win8 for some reason. Microsoft's strategy here makes little sense, cheesing off long time customers for mobile or all in one OS customers.

I'm pretty sure it's because the updated ISO breaks Windows ADK. It's just Microsoft being it's usual self, bad at communicating why

I was getting antsy for this update, having made the mistake of upgrading my motherboard/CPU/RAM after upgrading from 7 to 10, thereby invalidating my activation.

Microsoft tech support chat (a forum post somewhere had said they could fix it for you if you asked nicely) told me I would have to reinstall Win 7 in a full system wipe, activate it, and re-upgrade. No way I wanted to find/reinstall all the little programs I had collected over the years.

I ran unactivated for a month or more, hearing that the November Update would fix the issue.

November 14th came and went, no November Update available through Windows Update. Didn't want to mess with downloading and burning a patch disk, was getting nervous though.

A few days went by and it suddenly appeared in Windows Update. Let it download and install overnight.

Got up the next morning, went to Windows Activation, entered my Windows 7 key, and BAM! Windows is now activated.

Only bugs I've experienced were that sometimes the system wouldn't recognize my mouse until I unplugged and re-plugged it, and sometimes my X-Fi Titanium card wouldn't work until I reinstalled the driver. Both only took a few seconds to correct and both stopped happening after a while. The X-Fi bug happened again after the November Update install, but it seems fine now. I think that was mainly due to Creative not having their own drivers done until recently.

Re: The anti-griping posts, there do seem to be two distinct categories to complaints. First, you have substantive and detailed reports of specific problems. Frustration and unhappiness there are understandable. Then you have the ones that don't mention any specific problems and just spew tired sarcastic MS-hate rhetoric. Those are boring wastes of time that only serve to communicate the small-mindedness of the posters.

Ars Technica posted their thoughts on the matter (or at least Peter Bright's thoughts):
http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/11/windows-10-november-update-mysteriously-pulled-as-concerns-about-bugs-grow/

What is the general thought about Peter Bright? Is he a credible source? Does he appear to have bias?

Under Petri.com, Brad Sams speculates issues with the transition to its new development methodology workflow and expedited release cycles are showing in the Windows 10 November Upgrade: https://www.petri.com/microsofts-modernized-development-workflow-begins-show-cracks

I would have expected the quality of releases to improve over time (ie the quality of the Windows 10586 release to surpass that of Windows 10240)

I used to have the same problems.

Mouse disabled: go to device manager and look for your usb hubs or usb host controllers. Under device properties disable the checkbox "allow windows to disable this device to safe power" or somesuch. This has been a common windows problem for years.

X-fi: google the daniel_k drivers and use them. Flawless. :)

Sweet, thanks for the tips! I'll check them out when I get home.

I just ran into another bad issue with 10586 today.

I uninstalled the AMD video card drivers in order to install the new Crimson driver set.

Rebooted and I was greeted with my two side screens being just a garbled mess and my main monitor was not getting a signal at all.

I ended up having to turn off the computer and unplug both of the side monitors (one HDMI and one DP) and then power back on.

Then I was able to install the new drivers and plug the side monitors back in.

Did they even test this update before releasing it?

that happened with a desktop i was working on (just unplugged the video cable and plugged it back in and worked fine)

That's more of a AMD issue with some cards. I've had it happen in 7 and 8. Like likeman said, unplug the cable and it will clear up.

Did you even read what you just wrote? You installed an all new AMD driver and something imploded... So clearly Windows is at fault?

I'm sure it's going to be ignored, but the issue has been resolved and the links are back up. It was pulled because the following settings were turned back on after a upgrade if the user had previously turned them off.

Let apps use my advertising ID
Turn on SmartScreen Filter for web content
Let apps run in the background
Sync with devices

They fixed the issue, and will push out a update that will turn those features back off on systems that were affected by the upgrade. They probably figure it's better to do a full stop then get more FUD about privacy if someone noticed the issue.

Thanks for the detailed post, appreciate it. :)
