Is it a good idea to turn it off? I don't use another firewall and don't intend to.

So should I go no-firewall so that I can use applications without hassle or should I keep it on for security?
 
Depends on environment. If you're behind a firewall (router) and on a trusted LAN, it's fine to turn it off. Otherwise I'd leave it on and open ports as needed.
 
Does the built in firewall do outbound filtering? I don't have any xp boxes to play with here, and I've heard conflicting reports.

If it does, then keep it on. At least it'll help keep things in that shouldn't be let out. If not, it's a toss up. I might still keep it on, to keep the local network in check.
 
I have mine on even though I have Zone Alarm's firewall up as well. Never hurts to have both on.

I certainly hope that you have SOME kind of firewalling in place. I don't want to have to deal with the likes of your zombie as part of a DDOS or spam machine. My advice to you is to get an external firewall.

It actually does hurt a bit. You're doing twice the work for one line an may get conflicting rule sets because of it. Spend the money and get an external firewall. :)
Oh yeah...you're eating up CPU cycles and causing lots of latency for yourself with this method as well.
