We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.

Microsoft account not accepting correct password

I updated the BIOS of my desktop gaming PC yesterday. When I got to the Windows 11 login screen, it said my login PIN is no longer valid and I will need to log into my Microsoft account again and create a new PIN. I enter my Microsoft account password but it says "too many incorrect attempts have been made" or something along those lines. Thing is I didn't even enter a wrong password once. So I click on "forgot password" and it wants me to enter my recovery email address. I do and receive a code. I enter the code and then it says it also needs to verify using a second method which is my registered phone number. I enter the last four digits of my phone number as required but then it says this method (SMS recovery) is not available right now. Then I try the whole process again but then it says "too many recovery attempts have been made, please try again tomorrow." This happened yesterday and now again today. What the heck can I do?

By the way, yesterday, I was randomly allowed to log into my Microsoft account via my correct password on my MacBook. I should have disabled/removed the SMS recovery option and enabled the authenticator app recovery. At least that way you don't actually need to receive a code or anything to move forward. However, it is not accepting my correct password on my MacBook today either.

Edit: I think I am going to wait 2 days and try logging into my Microsoft account on my MacBook and disabling SMS recovery.

I had the same issue related to 2fa when setting up a new windows install a few months back. I was in fact able to log in from another machine and disable 2fa which allowed me to login on the windows install screen. Turned 2fa back on after that and haven't had an issue since, works as it should now.

So, I waited the recommended 48 hours before trying to reset my password. I went to reset my password and it asked me to enter my recovery email address to receive a code. I did and received the code. I enter it and then it says it also needs to verify using a second method (which is by SMS). I enter the last 4 digits of my phone number that I have in my Microsoft account but when I click to receive a code it says "This method of verification is not available right now". It is still saying this even after waiting 48 hours of not even accessing the Microsoft websites. I searched online and there are tons of people with this same issue. Right now I cannot sign into any Microsoft service including Hotmail/Outlook. Luckily I still have my Hotmail email saved and entered in the Mail app on macOS so I can still see and receive emails for it.

What the hell am I supposed to do? I actually do have a recovery code that I generated at the right time. Should I just use it or wait/try some more?

Tried the recovery code method. After entering all the details and everything, at the end it says something like "There is an issue with this service right now. Please try again later."

maybe your ip is being flagged ? could you try via cellphone connection on a new device like a phone ?

Tried using my iPhone's cellular data on my Mac via Hotspot. Same result.

However, I did restart my internet modem some weeks back. After that, one of the online forums I visit said my IP was blocked and I can't access the forum. I contacted the admin and he unblocked my IP address. Wonder if something similar is happening here? But then I also tried accessing via my phone's cellular data (but not on the first try). I will try again tomorrow via the phone's cellular data on the first try.

Just restarted my internet modem and got a completely/massively different IP.

Going to try again tomorrow with my new IP address that I got after restarting my internet modem.

Ya this happens to me from time to time, sometimes I just have to restart 1-2 times or even hard reset.

Meh. Microsoft just like to have fun with ya sometimes.. - Shrugs -

I might have found a solution but can't try it just yet as I tried again with my usual method and have to wait until tomorrow to try again. There are 70+ replies saying it worked. Fingers crossed it works for me too:

Still got "This method of verification is not available right now" for SMS.

what do you get if you try to sign in at myaccount.microsoft.com?

Just flushed the DNS on my MacBook. Will try again in a couple of hours.

Ran into this problem during my Windows install yesterday, it gave me the 'too many login attempts' error - I was able to reset my password via SMS 2FA, it gave me a 'try again later'-style message on my second attempt, but for the third attempt it let me log in successfully.

Figured Windows was having a little fun with me since I had switched to Linux for a bit.

It seems the more you try to get back in when it keeps giving you these errors, the account gets flagged by Microsoft (which is why SMS verification is not working now). People who have had the same issue said they left everything alone without trying to log in for a week or more and then when they tried it worked. I'm going to try one more time today (since I flushed my DNS) and if it doesn't work I'm just going to leave it alone for a week or so.

Edit: I'm just going to wait for a week or so without trying to gain access to the account.

After waiting four and half days of staying completely away from any Microsoft login website/page it sent me the SMS code to my phone and I was able to finally login by resetting my password.
And this is why I will always use a local account, no matter if it takes, when I need to use windows.
