A quick question: can I plug in a microphone to the motherboard (built-in audio) without turning off the computer? the speakers make some noise, so would that damage the motherboard in any way?

It should be fine, but most of the disclaimers (overly cautious) will say you need to turn off. I have never had a problem plugging in "passive" things.

An amplifier would be a different matter though.
