Hey everybody,

I am going to be getting a new x58 setup in the next few weeks and I am planning ahead for what needs to be done to perform well with my water setup. It is not yet set in stone, but it will most likely include the following

So now that I am upgrading to x58, I also want to add a block to what will be a GTX295. The current build is a P5Q PRO with a Q6600 stable at 3.6 with idle temps around 30-32.
I am concerned that when I upgrade to an i7 920 and tube both it AND the GPU in the same loop, my temps will be higher. Should this be a huge concern or is it possible that a single loop will suffice for the new build? So I am looking for opinions in that respect since it will save me a little money.

If it would be better to run a dual loop, it is possible with my reservoir since it has double inlet/outlet options. The issue surrounding this option is that I don't know where to put a second radiator. I brainstormed two possible options that need evaluation -

1) Stacking another 320 on the current radiator with the inlet/outlet on the same side, but back-to-back with the first.

2) Getting a 420 to stack on top of the current 320 with all inlet/outlets facing the same direction. The 420 would stick out a little further since it is longer, allowing compensation for the barbs to face the same direction as the ones on the 320, without the complication of option 1 where they would almost have to be placed back-to-back.

Both of these involve sandwiching so I need a little advice. Option one would make it look better but would involve some angled fittings to keep the tube distance as short as possible. Where as option 2 would make the it even heavier and award to carry. If I do go this route, where should the fans be placed? Would 3 (or 4 w/option 2) be sufficient for pulling air out of the radiators? Or, will I need more fans? Placing any fans on the inside for a push configuration won't be easy since the mounting system is universal for all radiator spacings which places mounting thumb screws at key areas on the inside for this bench.

I am going to leave it at that for the time being and please ask me for important factosr that I have left out. I am welcome to any ideas and recommendations and If I am doing anything wrong let me know as I have not been doing watercooling for very long.

Edit: if you are curious, I have a very well equiped external optical drive. I don't really use it that much anyway so putting one in the 5.25 wasn't worth it for me ;)

Could you just put another rad on the opposite side?

I don't think stacking really works that great. Just blowing warm air through each other.

I dont think that I could if you are referring to mounting it on the "inside" part of the case. It seems that the mounting thumb screws would get in the way.



I think this is a good idea although it is very expensive. I am looking to ensure portability so do you think If I bought it with the shrouds I could still mount at the back of the case using the 320 spacings? I think It might be too heavy to do that and then I would have to figure out how to control all of those fans.

Otherwise, if I am looking at hitting at least 4.0 on the CPU and eventually running SLI with GTX295, Is there another high end rad that I could use in a single loop and still have decent temps?

HA yeah that is an option. There is not a lot to work with though, on the right side is the power supply exhaust and a lot of open space for nothing to latch on to. Do you have any recommendations? I can post more pictures if need be. Im sure I can figure something out. Considering the option of extreme radiators, do you think something like the MO-RA or the MagiCool radiator would work? I can see that it would be possible to mount the MagiCool at the back of the case. I am on the fence though since that is practically 3 radiators and some say the mcp655 is enough but others say that 2 pumps are needed.
The reviews for the MagiCool are pretty sparse and from what I can tell, some people hate them and some love them. I do however have a 92mm adapter that fits on the upper right side of the case my the CPU. It connects directly to the slot that the PSU cable is ran through. Do you think that it would be possible to use a dual 92mm Black Ice and possibly a better replacement for the swiftech320? I dont think a true dual loop is possible because I would need another pump and this project is starting to add up. Let me know what you think

Just another idea...

Mount a double rad right behind the hard drives, in the upright position. You can make some brackets and get some longer screws, then use the holes for the hard drives to hold the rad. I guess you could just put right where the holes for the screws are, but might get in the way of that handle. You could use the the 92mm rad, you'll need some high static fans.

The Mo-Ra could be put in the same place except with the shroud. It's large though, around 17 inches long. Seems pretty expensive, $169.95 for rad + $48.95 for the shroud. :confused: You could make a stand, like the external hard drives that stand up, and just set it in there. Seems like either way the Mo-Ra is going to hinder the mobility of your rig. Same for the Magicool. I don't think you should have any problems with your pump, but tbh, I'm not really sure.
 
Nice work on those brackets btw. I think I have figured it out. What I am going to do is get a part fabricated for me. I would do it myself but I want to make damn sure that this part will be strong enough to hold a radiator. The current plan is to run pseudo dual loops through the D5/typhoon combo bay for the GPU and CPU. This way I can have separate radiators for each and have a standard loop order that I am familiar with.

loop 1 D5bay -- out to 120.4 rad -- cpu -- back to bay
loop 2 D5bay -- out to 120.3 rad -- gpu -- back to bay

Looking on the case head on, the right side is where I figured I can mount the new piece.
here is the original 92mm fan hanger that will be used as a template.

The plan is to keep the same base for mounting purposes but instead of the dual 92mm, I will get either a triple or quad radiator hanger made. Luckily this case with everything in it is very heavy and the extra weight shouldn't cause issues. I will have to add a few more threaded mounting holes to the tray since there are only 2 available. This will ensure stability along with security. The piece that I have in mind will be made of either thick acrylic or aluminum and definitely thicker than the piece above. Just as long as it will be able to support a radiator and fans. I considered taking a gamble and buying a 92mm rad, but I don't think it is as good as this solution. Plus, the stock hanger is probably too weak to support the weight of a radiator anyway. I won't be able to get it done until at least friday but I will post it here when I am finished


EDIT: Its a good thing I got the new piece made (@ bottom) because I sat on this one and busted it to next year

Just wanted to chime in and say I enjoy your cases aesthetics, very clean build for an open air setup!

Although I almost wish I had not seen it, as the case upgrade bug has been kept at bay for a while now... damn YOU:p

It is a very nice case and the construction is solid. We will put that to the test with a quad rad in the next few days.
 
I have found a solution. I wanted to have a really strong piece so I went with stainless steel. I wanted the same base as the 92mm fan hanger but with the ability to mount a quad radiator. I don't have the rad yet but it will be some quad rad with 15mm spacing.

This was done via water jet cutting. I think I will eventually powder coat it but for now I am going to leave it as is.
 
Sweet. Which way are you going to be blowing the fans? I mean if you have them pushing towards your monitor that'll be annoying and talk about dry eyes. :D

I ordered the radiator today so I am pretty excited to finish this project
 
and yeah I will probably still have a push configuration that results in it blowing towards the monitor in the current position. I have not decided which side of the hanger to mount the radiator though. I think inside will be best but I will need to perhaps tap some holes for more thumb screws. May not though, this thing is pretty solid and can hold a lot.
