meh rather have AMD... iGPU means nothing honestly. Socket is a dead end. AMD can use 4 32gb sticks...
Nothing wrong with that. iGPU's are great. Intel for media support, AMD for light gaming. Dead end sockets don't matter when price-per-performance is the main goal. AMD can use 4x32GB sticks, but it's hit or miss... largely miss.
 
Looks like price drops before 385K? Is it Q1 next year? Or later? Any word on that?

You would be surprised at the "team red" haters out there. I've heard it all when trying to explain the differences and why AMD is better. It's as bad as trying to talk a person out of making a disastrous financial decision with two repos and a sub 500 FICO that insists they NEED a BMW despite being $30k underwater with their current trade and having $10k for a down payment. They get mad, hang up and take their biz somewhere else.

Over the years I've heard:

AMD is cheap
AMD is unstable
AMD overheats
AMD is not for professional gaming
AMD won't work for CAD
AMD is for people that cannot afford Intel

Now granted, AMD certainly has had their fair share of bad stuff. But recently, Intel just seems to keep drinking naphtha and pissing on the dumpster fire expecting it to get better.

That said, if you're set on getting that chip in OP, that price looks good and I suspect a lot of folks sitting on the fence may bite.

You forget that the internet is absolutely full of rabid AMD fanboys, you cannot say a single positive thing about anything Intel (or Nvidia for that matter) and not get dogpiled on most sites.

$449 for a 285K is still a little much for a dead platform, I think the 265K at like $279 is quite attractive though especially for mixed workloads.
 
If you have an ARC card, Handbrake now has an option for newer Intels to use both QuickSyncs at the same time (iGPU + GPU) and it is fast! Faster than an Apple Silicon, and smaller file sizes to boot. I’m now back to movie encoding on Windows again.
 
I just picked up the 265k for my new unraid build. I wanted the igpu for transcoding for plex. Also 20 cores for 279 is cheap as shit. I have some on VM's and dockers. Motherboard , 96gb ram and CPU I was in like 700 bucks. Side note trying to find a Motherboard that supports two 8x pci-e slots is a pain in the ass.. They are labeled creator boards or Ai boards. Need it to run a 3070 RTX in one slot for bare meatal VM and the other for my 24 HBA card.

What program are you using for encoding movies? Also what type of files/decoding are you converting to what file/encoding? Kind of interested, haven't done it in years. Is it to make them smaller? Or other reasons?

Handbrake is the name of the program, it’s mostly used by people to convert movies to use in Apple ecosystem. AppleTV for us. Converting MKV to M4V. Apple Silicon (M1,M2, M3, etc) is very fast at converting, but at the expense of higher file size than average. So I was pleasantly surprised to find a faster solution that has also smaller file sizes.

I see. Curiously are these blue ray discs? Or movies bought on apps like Amazon or YouTube any other apps like Netflix or HBO Max or Hulu? I'm wondering how people are "owning" their movies now a days? I understand that you are converting the file type to save for yourself, but how are you obtaining the movies to begin with? I haven't "bought" a movie in years. Mainly because I feel like you never truly own them and I need to do what you're doing by saving them to personal drives.

I personally rip all my 4k's though MakeMKV . This does not shrink them though, it just puts them in a MKV container. So they take up a good bit of space. Depending on the movie from 40g to 80g a movie. Granted I have a movie theater in my house and quality is a necessity. After they are copied to the server they are just boxed up. So I don't have to worry about self space. Also if anything should happen to the server. I have them and can copy them back if needed. Granded that takes a good bit of time. 15-20 minutes a movie or so.
 
Maybe if you do a decent bit of productivity stuff. But for any amount of gaming I'd get a $320ish 7800X3D over any Intel and have the option of upgrading to the next 2 generations at least on that socket.

Not just apple but also for converting the older bounties of the 7 seas over to more space efficient codices and if you rip anything yourself and want to turn the output into a particular mkv.
 
I have a backup card for such occasions old GT-710 or GT730 PCI-e and enough to drive both my monitors. Or I can steal my kids GTX 1060 if need be
I have the same one for just in case lol. Best thing about it is works without needing an additional power source gets powered from the Pcie lane 😄

not saying you're wrong, but this was my rationale for going Intel:

I got a 14900k because more cores for less money and I don't do a ton of gaming to begin with (though this may change but a 14900k should be fine). I dug up a new 14900k for like $380 on ebay.

Oh and I can run a 14900k on a z790 ddr4 board, reuse my 128GB ddr4 RAM and avoid paying $2352345623487562395 for the same amount of DDR5

Otherwise I'd have gone AMD. At least with AMD I don't need to stick a stupid plate on the socket to avoid burning up the CPU.

edit: Oh and I am upgrading from a 3900x
 
All CPU deals right now are soured because of skyrocketing RAM prices. So, unless you're sitting on a stockpile of DDR5 RAM, I don't see how it's a good time right now to build any desktop PC.
