So I'm building a new computer, Micro ATX style, and it's not booting. The fans start spinning, the case's LCD screen comes on, but no video goes to the monitor. I've tried with the integrated video and with a separate AGP card.
My Enermax MicroATX 250 watt power supply though, is emitting a strange burning smell. I know that new power supplies often have a slight odor to them, but this is stronger than I've seen in the past. I can smell it throughout the house when it is running. I had a friend come over to get his opinion, and he agrees. The PS is also quite hot to the touch after running for just a minute.
My Motherboard (Epox 8RGM3I)'s manual states the absolute minimum is 250 watt. I'm running one harddrive, one optical drive, an AGP card, a 512 stick of RAM, one case fan, and the case's built in LCD screen for cpu temp and such. Processor is a Barton 2500+ Mobile. Using the PS calculator I found in the FAQ, the 16 amps on the 12 volt rail this one offers should be sufficient.
So it seems this PowerSupply is defective, and I'm probably going to have to RMA it (purchased through NewEgg...but am I supposed to go through the manufacturer?).
Should I exchange it for the same power supply, or do you think I need a stronger one? What is the going reccomendation around here as far as MicroATX goes?
To make sure this is the problem, my friend is bringing over a spare Power Supply tomorrow, but it isn't MicroATX, so if it does work, I'll have to leave it hanging out of the case until I can get my hands on a replacement.
