looking to put together a system with top quality components. price not much of a concern.

- c2d
- either silverstone sg01 or lanboy

this box is going to live inside a shelf cabinet. i will be venting the cabinet, but i need high quality cooling options. if necessary, i am willing to bring a cooling tube up from the crawlspace with fans (contractor told me he did this for a home theater solution for about $500 - lots of cool air, no noise). obviously if i can get away with normal pc cooling that would be better.

stability and running cool/quiet are higher priorites then gaming speed. i may be encoding some video, so i would like something with a bit of horse power, but i am not gonna be running games at 1600x1200 maxed, etc.

i will be cutting out a small section of the shelf by my feet and putting in a mesh grill, and maybe doing something similiar on the other side (which goes into a coat closet).

i want to build a very nice system, and never fiddle with it again (hardware wise). if it ran cool, quiet and fast for 3 years, i would be a happy camper.

Clock for clock Conroes beat out AMD. AMD chips run cooler though. If cooling and quiet take precedence then your best bet is probably a dual core AMD.

Why buy a case at all? You might as well save money there. Just have an intake and an exhaust and you should be good to go. Have you thought about how you are going to do cabling?

i have two small kids :p sooner or later they are going to pull the shelf open and throw in a block or a puzzle piece.

hmm... may have to take a hard look at the amd solution.

Why not built a shelf to cover the top and sides so that the kiddies can't :p Could make it easily removable and keep nice and cool then

well i am also going to squeeze in a printer. that whole front that looks like three shelves is just a facade - the whole boxy shelf comes out. its about 22" cube in space. so i need to pack a computer and an inkjet printer in there. i can get tricky with fans inside, and i can blow a hole through the right side (inside the shelf) which goes into a coat closet - and to the left which would be a hole by my feet - for ventilation. if i need more air, i will have to go down (into the crawlspace).

then a grommet in the countertop to bring video, a usb cable for usb hub, very small speakers, key/mouse receiver.

i had also thought of wall mounting an lcd to the right, but im happy to plunk it down on the desktop for now.
