I'm attempting to help a friend troubleshoot a mouse problem he has been experiencing for the past week or so, and it has occurred no matter what USB mouse is plugged in. The issue itself is that every couple of minutes (no real pattern occurs, it is just frequent) his mouse will completely lock up for several seconds. Processes will keep going on in the background, if he is playing a game it keeps going smoothly, he just cannot move his mouse or click upon anything. It will usually clear up after 5-10 seconds, or if he immediately unplugs and replugs in the mouse it will start working. The light on the bottom of the mice continues to glow while the issue is ongoing, with no interruption.

I've had him run through some standard troubleshooting; trying a different USB port, trying a different mouse, checking for viruses, ascertaining there isn't overly much fragmentation and that he has enough free space on his drive, and so forth.

Beyond that, we've thoroughly searched on the issue to try and find anything else out...it is a laptop, and we disabled the PS/2 touchpad, but it didn't help. We also updated his USB drivers to no avail. Some research suggested updating display drivers to see if it might help things out, and that did nothing as well.

Might anyone have suggestions as to more things to test out in hopes of fixing this? Any help is appreciated!

I had the same issue, and it is well documented on the EVGA forums. In my case the issue was with an external USB hard drive that I would leave plugged in. Not only did it add several seconds to boot time, but it was also causing the mouse lag. I belive a firmware upate for the motherboard eventually fixed the issue.

I've also seen this issue with Windows 7 and certain wireless mice.

Hrm. Neither of the mice tested are wireless, and it also is the only USB device attached. He also has the latest BIOS for his board.

Edit: New info! Apparently once in a while it says 'unrecognized USB device', which I can only imagine coincides with the freezing.

I had this happen and it was a bad mouse. It could be that he has two bad mice, it's worth a shot trying another mouse.

I wore out a spot on my mousepad (hard plastic kind) and had a similar issue. I was convinced it was a mouse issue, but in reality I just needed a new surface. Worth a shot.

Had him try a couple've new surfaces, the problem persisted. Same when trying a third mouse!
