mic not working

i have a mic on my monitor and its been working great. but today when i was on msn and i wanted to talk to my friend the freakin mic doesnt work. since i was going to format my computer, i formated it, and then i tried it again the mic still doesnt work. i connected the mic to my laptop and it works perfecty. what the hell??
is there something wrong with my computer or software?
 
Could be the mic port on your sound card has gone. Have you checked the record settings in your sound drivers to make sure nothing has muted the mic and that the record level is ok?
 
yeah i have checked. what can i do now? should i install a new soundcard. i am currenty using the mobos sound thing. i also have a sound blaster on my hands. should i use that?
 
Do you have another mic you can try? If the mic port is dead, I'd just pop the Sound Blaster in there.
 
yep, i went out and got a mic from staples. and i also tested the mic on my laptop and it works on the laptop
