Mic isn't working

I'm just using on-board audio from my motherboard, sound works fine but the mic doesn't. Its just a cheapo mic and is plugged into the red jack but when I go to the sound recorded built into windows it doesn't work. Either I'm seriously being dumb here or something is wrong because it shouldn't be complicated. I have made sure all of the mic volumes are up and not muted.
 
try another mic.... or try your mic on another computer. chances are its one of those two things acting up. update your motherboards sound drivers as well, if they already arent.
 
Ok, double click the speaker icon in the task tray->select options->properties->recording radio button->make sure there is a check box beside mic in the list->click ok->make sure that there is a check box beside the select box for your mic input and that your mic input level is turned up.

That's the most common problem I see with mics. If not that it could be a bad mic. Just a note, the recording properties is different than the playback properties (which you mentioned I believe by describing a muted condition). You can in fact should leave your mic muted in the playback options for normal operation.
 
Ill try your suggestions when I get home tonight.
