MGE Vigor 500

I know that the 500 watt rating is exaggerated, its proboly around 300-350 itself. I have heard bad things about this psu, but have seen good ratings in website reviews. I have had this power supply for about 3 months now. These are my railings.

and here is everything through BIOS.

vcore = 1.68
+3.3V = 3.34
+5V = 5.05
+12V = 12.48

I think the hardware monitor sensor is off (11.86??) so I dont worry too much. I believe my psu is fine. So then whats up with everyone saying how much it sucks? But I think MGE should of sold this power supply as a 350 Watt psu instead of 500. Seems more reasonable.

But tell me, am I in danger of anything blowing up or something not POSTing one night? is the *BLING BLING* more like *GIBNK*?

That's a fairly decent power supply... for it's time. If I remember correctly, most of it's capability is on the 5V rail. But it can do 500W (if you have an assload of 5V requirement, that is.) I wouldn't say that they're Makers of Great Electronics. More like Makers of Mediocre Electronics. There's better out there, but there's a hell of a lot worse.

Usually, the more "bling" a power supply has, the harsher the critique, because you're paying more for bling when you could be investing in stronger, cleaner rails. The criticism is especially harsh if it's not made by a company that people associate with quality, like OCZ for example.

Anyhoo... You shouldn't have any problem. Your CPU is 5V regulated after all. But if you do upgrade to an A64 or P4, definitely consider something with more of a 12V rail.

No i am forcing it to run at 133 FSB instead of 166 FSB. fsb/ram ratio = 1

if i ran it at 166 fsb it wouls be 5/4. someone told me it was bad. oh well 512 of xms this weekend at frys.

I know what he's talking about. Might actually be a board issue, though. I had one that wouldn't run at 333MHz FSB with certain RAM. Would do it with others. Would always work at 266MHz FSB.

I have more problems with Asus boards. Don't get me wrong.. I actually have one now. When they work, they work great. But when they don't, they're so problematic in so many different ways. A7N8X was one of my biggest headaches.

no i can run @ 166 FSB fine. i just heard that if i ran my cpu at its full speed (166) it would kill my ram. my ram would boot at like 318 mhz. im ocing my ram then. isnt that too high for generic ram? when i get my xms i might oc to 3200 speeds.

it won't die at all..... ur not volt moding it or anything.... ur running stock voltage and just overcclocking it..... no big deal..... just run ur cpu at full potential.. but I have a hard time believing that pc2100 ram// generic ram... would run at pc2700 speeds stable....

Yeah. You're not going to "kill" your RAM at stock voltages. It's either going to work or not. The problem I had was constant BSOD's at 166MHz FSB, but I never "killed" the RAM @ 2.5V.

alright, i set my cpu back to its full ruinning speed, 166 mhz so my 3000+ barton runs at 3000+ cpu temp is still the same, but now my northbridge feels really hot. not hot to the touch, i can leave my finger there like forever, its just feels like hot toasted bread. should i buy a northbridge hsf combo or just buy a 40mm fan and place it ontop my current hs?

edit; i got a thermometer and put it in the heatsink, as far back as possible so it was touching
the heatsink, aafter 5 trails, the avg temp of my northbridge hs was 106.89 fahrenheit. is 106F* too high?

thats kinda low and nb are always hot... they were made to run that way so dont worry .

thanks. ive been worried about this for a while now. but i still just might buy a 40mm fan with some blue led bling to help cool and look hot
