I was thinking to use Metro as my HTPC interface. Do you think it is posisble to use Kinect with Metro to control the computer from the sofa ? :)

Wasn't Microsoft promising native support for Kinect for their next OS when the Kinect came out?

I know they sell a specific Kinect marketed for the PC that comes with or tells you to download the SDK in the box.

I was going to get this to track head movements for flight simulators (so you dont have to wear IR lights on your head ala TrackIR) but sadly I don't think the Kinect is capable of picking up minute head movements from 7-10 feet away in a darkened room.

I think the darkness of the room you are in doesn't matter.

The camera transmits invisible near-infrared light and measures its “time of flight” after it reflects off the objects.

Time-of-flight works like sonar: If you know how long the light takes to return, you know how far away an object is. Cast a big field, with lots of pings going back and forth at the speed of light, and you can know how far away a lot of objects are.

Using an infrared generator also partially solves the problem of ambient light. Since the sensor isn’t designed to register visible light, it doesn’t get quite as many false positives.

As for the flight sim, no clue if it would work.
