This project was one of 13 to be awarded a $100,000 grant from Phase I of the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program, which invests in the development of “transformative” and “pioneering technologies.” Here’s how it would work. The microorganisms would be specially designed to break down metals by their elements. Then the organisms would be used as “bio-ink”—using the Martian atmosphere, a machine will print new chips with the metals inside the organisms.
