The award for "headline of the day" goes to this Popular Science article. Bonus points for using "eat and excrete" in the description of the article. :D

This project was one of 13 to be awarded a $100,000 grant from Phase I of the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program, which invests in the development of “transformative” and “pioneering technologies.” Here’s how it would work. The microorganisms would be specially designed to break down metals by their elements. Then the organisms would be used as “bio-ink”—using the Martian atmosphere, a machine will print new chips with the metals inside the organisms.

I need something that can utilize the flooring in my house to create machines. If only I had some of those "carpet-munching" things.

If they could use the iron in the Martian surface as a material for the machines, I'll do you one better...

"Metal-Munching Microbes Might Manufacture Machines Modifying Mars"

There, now it's perfect. The "On" in there was bugging me.

Self replicating, metal eating, nano-machines....what could go wrong?

Can we say "grey goo hypothesis"....
