Messenger connects but browsers won't

Wife has a laptop that will no longer surf. Yahoo messenger and what not will still connect but not any of the browsers. I cleared out the bugs and nasties and tried a winsock fixit to no avail. All I seem to find on the web is the winsock fix. Anyone have any other ideas? Thx.
 
check your dns settings and check to make sure your browser isn't set to use a proxy server.
 
if using Internet Explorer, TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > CONNECTIONS > LAN SETTINGS

Any proxy server information in here? If there is, it is likely not correct. Remove it and see what happens. Is this a work laptop, home use? Any other machines having this issue?

Tell her to stop going to porn sites when you're not around. :D
 
Checked proxies and hosts earlier. The usual suspects seem a no go.

I'm tryin to get her hooked so she'll surf the prOn when I'm there. :D

I'll probably do a recovery to get her going ASAP.
