Messed windows sharing

I am trying to connect from one machine to another via a windows share. I can ping machine a from machine b and vice versa, i can ping either by name (DNS resolution) or ip address. I can connect from machine a to machine b only by ip address even though with ping i can resolve the name. I cannot connect from machine b to machine a no matter what i try. Neither machine is connected to a domain. I can terminal service from machine b to machine a either by name or ip address.

did you allow file/printer sharing through the firewall? Can you connect by computer name ( eg: map a network drive to \\computername\sharename)?
