Has or is anyone using the Meraki MR16 APs? If so what do you think about it?
 
I have an MR18 which looks to be the successor/replacement for the MR16 and I enjoy it a lot. The range is better than the Unifi LR WAPs (non-pro models), and speed is a little better from what I've seen on the 2.4ghz freq, there is no 5ghz on my Unifi WAPs, but obviously the 5ghz is considerably faster than the 2.4ghz freq.

We got ours free from a seminar (they ran out of the cheap ones or something so we got this nice one). I personally don't know if it's worth the money though unless you are getting a really good deal. You need the license on them which is like $150/year.

For what it's worth, I'm buying Unifi LR WAPs for our office environment, and we have some high end cisco waps for the production floor that needs zero-handoff/roaming capabilities. It wasn't worth the price of entry for our needs in the office areas to spend more than what the Unifi line costs/offers.
 
I have around 30-50 running the Casino/hotel at which I work and they are amazing.

I've had no downtime (Other than the 1-2 minute updates annually) for the past 5 years.

They are workhorses and have lasted way longer than any other access point we've used here.
 
MR16 are good APs designed for density. They are really nice to manage since you control the individual AP from the cloud controller so you can quickly update or change settings on an entire site all at once. They now offer the ability to handle layer 3 roaming by tunneling the traffic from the AP you initiated the connect on to any other AP through the network, so it allows you to roam without having to reauthenticate the connection on each AP. (Only matters if you are trunking multiple vlans through wifi)

The uptime of the APs is very good as stated, and the throughput is good as well. I would agree you'd need to be getting a volume discount for them to make sense price wise, but they are probably in line with other enterprise solutions. (I don't think they would make sense for SOHO)

I will say that to me the range of them isn't going to be as large as you might think, nor do they have the range of the old G aeronet APs. But that is by design because they use internal antennas versus the larger external antennas found on older APs. The difference now is that every person in your environment is probably carrying 2+ devices that are either connected to your wifi network, or just have the wifi turned on and are still "talking" on the airwaves. They are designed so you can get more APs into an area for better load distribution, and reduce congestion with neighboring APs. The cloud controller can automatically scale down the power to help make sure that one AP isn't stepping on another since there are very limited number of channels especially in the 2.4ghz range. (typically 1,6,11 so you get 3 non overlapping channels)

I bring this info up because we are attempting to explain to others in our environment why one of these won't cover multiple stories and thousands of square feet with a single AP. If you are trying to cover a huge area that might only have 1 or 2 concurrent users, then you might want to see if you can find something with external antennas. If you have a cube farm or a break room that is going to see 10+ users per AP these will bring great boost in speed as they have simultaneous dual band so you can spread out the workload and pack more APs into the area. A typical use case of 2.4ghz with N devices might have the connection speed at 130mbps, but actual throughput at say 60mbps. Divide that by the number of users, so 60 / 10 = 6mbps per user in HALF duplex. 10 users on a 2.4ghz N radio are getting about half the speed you would have gotten from 10baseT.
 
Several MR18's. Love them. Rock solid.

Got into some UniFi 802.11ac units, one of the worst decisions I've ever made. This was after coming from dozens of their previous AP units that worked very well for years.

And the MR18's (inc. 3-year sub) cost about the same as the 802.11ac UniFi units.
