Memtest86 like program, for Hard disks

Hello,

Does anyone know a good program like Memtest86, but instead of checking memories, one that checks hard disks?

Basically a program that fits on a floppy disk (bootable), and doesnt rely on any specific OS (windows).
Freeware if possible.

Memtest86 is thorough, stand alone memory test for x86 architecture computers. BIOS based memory tests are a quick, cursory check and often miss many of the failures that are detected by Memtest86.

ps - dont say Scandisk :)
 
You're best bet would be the manufacturer's diagnostic tool. Most manuf. have a program that you can run to check the drive, and write zero's to it.. I'd start there..
