Hrmmm...A Long one here...

Well lets see, it all started about a year ago, I decided I was gonna build a PC...I had previously worked on an AMD Athlon 600, and this was to be my new system...

So I went on and ordered a P4S8X (Oh Boy), a Pentium 4 2.53, some Corsair XMS RAM, some Hard Drives, etc...Funny thing happened, One compny was taking to long, so I placed a replica order with another and tried to cancel the original, well in the end, I ended up getting two orders...

Well I had quite a few problems, first off I had the well documented AGP 8X thing, my Radeon 9700 would cop out of all games and 3D apps...GRRRR!!!!! I would get the blue screens, it was crazy...I thought it was me, come to find out (just now) it's so well documented that this board is questionable... Oh well huh...

So I took both to a PC place and one time they did some temp fix for everything, I think they just tweak some stuff or somethin, it worked for a bit then screwed up again...Then I went back, they claimed I had bad RAM...I said "4 sticks of Corsair 512" they said "yep"...I found that highly obscure, but I ordered new Kingston RAM approved for the MB...

I keep trailing off...Ok...So, lets see, before I got the RAM I installed a GeForce 2, and that fixed the 3D game problems, but I would still get random STOP Errors, they are were usually along the tune of "Page Fault In Non-Paged Area" type errors, sometimes a driver error...Win32k.sys, and a Cx00000005...That one always seems to show up...

Well then, I replaced the ram, still got stop errors...

Well then last week happened, I've been learning PC Tech and Netorking a bit, it always been an interest, and now I have the time...I am trying to get a good lab together, and I decided to go through a lot of stuff...

I currently use one of my P4S8X boards, like I said, I still got the application shut downs, not so much Blue Screening, but that happens to...

Well, I decided to update the bios to the latest, I did that, installed the Corsair that had been sitting around...Ran Memtest for 16 hours...NO ERRORS!...I was like "that's what I thought" it seems Asus has some memory problems to that they fixed in the previous BIOS (I didn't have that one, I had never updated)...

I still have yet to bust out the other Motherboard, put that IDENTICAL system together and Memtest, but I will...

I installed Win2K, it installed fine, very quick...but you know I had to get Prime95 going, well it runs for 5 or 6 tests and then froze, I was wondering, what that means, it doesn't leave an error, I just couldn't move mouse/keyboard and it froze...

Funny thing, it seems my HSF and not been Thermal Pasted to the CPU (odd), I'm thinking that maybe it's overheating and causing it to freeze, downloading MBM so I can pay attention to temperatures, I don't think it's the RAM, what do you guys think, MemTest ran for 16 hours, reported nothing, then I ran Microsofts utility, no problems...That's why I think it's overheating...

Also, I'm not an overclocker, I'm wondering what my timing should be for RAM...I'm still struggling to understand, but I wanna make sure my board is stable...

What do you guys think...

Thanks for your time...

Jesus, it's so dusty around this fan, this whole damn case...GRRR!

I'm thinking it's overheating in Prime, I can't see it being a Memory error, just wanna check with you guys...I feel ashamed at the shape of my computer right now...

I'm thinking I'll get a better Fan, clean up a bit and get some Thermal Paste, what do you guys recommend?

If Prime95 locks the box and memtest runs for 16 hours without errors, it's almost certainly not the RAM, but the processor or the board (including BIOS).

In this case I'd be tempted to blame the board or the BIOS, were it not for the fact that you dont have any thermal paste in between the CPU and the heatsink!
Spread a little paste on the processor and replace the heatsink, then run prime95 again.

That's what I wanted to hear, I thanks you very much, hopefully that's the case, then I can build another system, instead of trying to upgrade what I have...

Any suggestions on my timings in BIOS?

Thanks...

paste is pretty important, well its more than pretty important.

Go with the paste luke, go with the paste.

Even if it isnt overheating use paste. But dont glob it on like you need to use the whole tub or something. Boxed procs come with more than enough paste. Use the amount specified on the directions.

My Boxed Proc. didn't come with paste...

Just the HSF/Proc...

The Hink Sink fan is one of the older P4 ones, kinda dusted up, I might get two of those SP94's...and some paste...

a local mom and pop shop should have some, maybe even the cheap stuff for free. Or it might be a buck or two. If you said your hsf is junk maybe picking one up from a place like that isnt a bad idea either.

(i like mom and pop shops :p)

Cool, thanks, at what Temp would my 2.53 be overheating, I kinda wanna test and watch temps, but I think I'll get the HSF and Paste first eh...

well you could to intels site or look on the internet, but id say if it doesnt lock up its cool enough :)

Ah ok, just ran Memtest with my current timings for about 10 1/2 Hours...No Errors...All Tests Enabled, testing all RAM, so I Really can't see this stick of Corsair being bad, now to test the other stick...I really wanna slap the tech who claimed the RAM was bad...

I think it was the board and the earlier BIOS that I had, now, like I said, I think it's a Cooling problem...So We'll see...

Tell me his name and I will slap the techs for you! Idiots.
I was at work the other day at a Cox training center installing Cat5e and was listening to an instructor showing a Mobo to 4 women. He was explaining that the battery on the mobo is to hold/retain windows settings so you dont have to change your resoloution, wallpaper, etc everytime you boot up. The women all said "ahhhhh"
No mention of the clock or bios settings being retained.

Hey you live in Phoenix, I live in Sierra Vista...Near Tombstone...lol...It was some Tech at a local place called "Computer Max" Punk, that really gets me, I think this board has been screwing me all along, it looks like Asus finally released a decent Bios for it...No Memtest errors, I'm currently testing another stick of the same RAM, the tech said that was screwed too, I originally had 4 sticks, 2 from Newegg, and 2 from Atacom I think, I thought it wierd how all 4 sticks from different places could've been bad...I gave two away, that sucks...

Now I can build a couple of new Biostars and not worry about working on these...now instead of 1 Biostar, I can get two...MUHAHAHAHA!

What is this... The Arizona Thread?

Tucson here, and I'm with everyone else. Get a better HSF and some thermal paste ( SWS Electronics in Tucson has plenty of both )

Did you see Arizona beating up on UCLA...WoooHooo...

Anywho, yep, that's what I'm gonna do, after I update the bios on my other board and test the RAM, I'll grab two, and run Prime...thanks guys.,..
