I have a friend who is building a computer for the first time. She currently has ONLY the following parts.
Antec truepower 380
Gigabyte GA-7N400-L (nforce2 ultra 400 chipset)
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton)
2x512 MB Buffalo 3200 memory with winbond ch-5 chips
geforce mx video card
She is running windows XP on her other computer and hasn't transitioned her hard drive yet. I told her to build her new computer and run memtest86 just to make sure the memory was OK. So she got some errors and we ended up testing both modules individually. One module had 2 errors and another module had 5 errors. We relaxed the timing to 11-3-3-2. One module passed and another did not.
She is planning on RMAing the memory. Do you think she should RMA the motherboard also? If she keeps the current motherboard and her new memory fails memtest would that be a definite indication that the motherboard has problems?
Let me know what you think. Happy New Year.
