Memory Upgrade for BF2?

Hi,
I was wondering if I would get more out of my system if I were to upgrade to two gigs of ram, instead of the one that I currently have. The problem is that when I play bf2 I notice that the higher settings require more ram, and that I am accessing the hardrive more than I need to. I checked with the taskmanager during the game, and while playing special forces I was using 1.21 gigs of ram, and it was chugging on my system...

My system currently is:
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ @ 2.7Ghz
Nvidia 7600GT
2 x 512 mb 533 DDR2
200gb hd 7200rpm
250 watt psu (LOL)
dvd-rw/lightscribe drive

Would it be noticable if I were to upgrade to two gigs of ram? or would the performance gain only be marginal? Also, would I be looking at a higher oc on my video card if I were to get a better psu?

I was looking at this ram at newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145525
I would be getting two sticks.

Thanks for the help :D

I tested this with my system when i first got pc6400.
I had 2gb of pc3200 in it. ran great
Ordered 1gb stick of 6400, ran like crapola. Ordered another 1gb stick, ran perfect again.
i am running vista now and 2gb's runs great. I might go to 3gb soon though.

So yes, 2gb's will make a huge difference.

bullshit. they will make no difference.
graphics card will.

Obviously you never played Battlefield 2, the game executable alone can take up to 1.2 to 1.3GB of ram if you go in high details. That's WITHOUT the OS and other process running att he same time...

So Stop talking about what you don't know kid.

To the OP, YES BF2 LOVE 2GB you will see a BIG difference.

bullshit. they will make no difference.
graphics card will.

BF2 needs 2 gigs to rum smooth.....The best graphics card in the world wont help you if your short on system memory......

There is a thread around here that is quite old, where everyone who upgraded to 2 gigs saw a huge difference in BF2..myself included...

Oh, and welcome to the forums..:)

Wow.. After reading this and comparing it to your other memory thread, you are officially the short bus driver of the [H] Forums.

IF you have dual monitor support, watch your page file increase well past the 1GB barrier. What happens then?

I would LOVE (<- Insert sarcasm here) to hear your response, but hard drives now become the overflow .. and quite a bit slower vs. DDR2 or DDR1 they be. Results.. stuttering.

Greatest video card in the world, + BF2 + 512 to 1GB memory = stuttering.. Plain and simple.

Before typing in responses that you OBVIOUSLY have no level of intelligence in, try to do us all a favor and research your posts. If you can't handle that, then turn the computer back over to mom and dad.

Your ignorance makes baby Jesus cry.

2gb of memory makes a HUGE difference in BF2 game play and the reasons are posted here so I won't repeat them. Our lab tested it well over a year ago and I have personally run the game with 1gb (2 x 512mb), 2gb ( 2 x 1gb AND 4 x 512mb), and 4gb (4 x 1gb). 2gb+ is a must.

Another good trick is to put your Windows paging file onto a physically seperate HD if you have one in your system. This further limits disk I/O on the system disk which is already running the OS and the also the game in most cases.

my friend has a athlon 64 3500+ with 1 gig of ram and a 6600Gt. his comp ran bf2 decent but then i gave him 512mb of ram to put into his system and the difference was like night and day, so yes, another extra gig will help alot because bf2 is a resource hog.

I agree with everyone's comments about 2gb making a huge difference, both in performance and load times. I help run a gaming center, and all the PC's started out with 1gb of ram each. After upgrading some of them to 2gb, the load times are practically cut in half, and people were fighting to play on those computers instead of the ones with 1gb. Another gb of ram is dirt cheap now... and you can find a 2gb kit for $100ish, so if you have a little spare change, I'd throw a 2gb kit in with your 1gb.

another vote for 2 gigs

it was like a whole new game with 2gb, and i run everything on the highest maxed out settings on 1600x1200, and its smooth as can be with 2gb now.

even gave a buddy 256mb to toss into his 1gb rig, and we saw less stuttering and skipping with just that bit, but he does run his setitngs quite a bit lower

I agree. My old rig was pretty solid (A64 3200+, 6800GT, 1 gig RAM) but load times were very long and there was stuttering in the game. This was all because of the lack of RAM. Other than the stuttering and long load times, my 6800GT handled the game just fine. Now with my new rig (granted it's much improved overall), just the fact I have 2 gigs of RAM cuts the loading times drastically and the gameplay is always buttery smooth.

I would take a look at this G. Skill. It's only slightly more expensive and has been getting positive reviews.

Good Luck!

Will that ram even work in my computer? Mine came with 533 originally so I have no idea whether it can handle the 800... but then again I have no idea. yes, I am running a socket am2 mobo.:)

Okay, so I think I'm just going to get ddr533 because I can't find whether or not my computer can handle ddr800... and I'm not going to be overclocking that much because I'm just looking for a smoother game of bf2... Thanks for all the help, and I would appreciate any more suggestions :D

I'm a huge fan of BF2. Pretty much all I play online these days. Well that and Homeworld2. Anyways I upgraded to 2GB's of DDR2-600 and I noticed a HUGE difference. The big difference you notice is with 1GB installed is you get hard drive swapping. This is split second passes while playing the game. I like to describe this as game stuttering. Well with 2GB's that went away completely. I have the exact same card as the above's thread starter with pretty much same speed CPU and I can guarantee an extra GB of memory for BF2 helps out. It was the best investment I made for my upgrade.

I play BF2 in 1024x768@100hz 2X FSAA with 2 X AF, all in game settings set to max quality. The game runs perfectly smooth in any situation tossed at it.

I picked up 2GB 4 x 512MB Corsair DDR2-667 (PC5300). Set me back around $250.00 give or take. Also I would reccomend buying 4 sticks of 512 instead of 2 1GB sticks. Reason being if anything goes wrong with 1 or 2 sticks you don't have to replace all your memory jsut the ones causing issues.
