Memory upgrade advise

Need some advise.

I have an older system that I'm still pretty happy with performance wise....other than the memory.

P4 2.6c Northwood 533FSB
6600GT
500w PSU
512MB pc2700 2x256

I am in desparate need of a memory upgrade.
This is all on an older MSI mATX board with only 2 DIMM slots.

I have been contemplating buying the GSkill 2x1gig PC4000 kit on Newegg in the hopes that it would still be viable and usable in the next system I put together in 18-24 months.

Is that a viable option? Or am I being too much of an optimist in thinking that that speed memory will be useable in a mid-level machine in 2 years?

Any and all advise is welcomed.

I think PC4000 is a bit overkill with this setup. You are better to get a nice and cheap set of PC3200 sticks. In addition, in 1-2 years, DDR2 will be pushed on the market and prices will get cheaper so it's a waste to get some premium stuff.

Well my original thought was that a pair of pc3200 512s are going to cost me close to $100 anyway and the PC4000 2x1gig GSkillz are going for $158 (and OCing quiet nicely from what I have read as well). If I could use the pc4000 in my next rig then it's a no brainer...but if your thinking that DDR2 is going to be the dominant standard (even in a middle of the line machine) in 24 months then it doesn't make sense. DDR has been the dominant standard for so long now that I guess I should expect that.

Well, PC4000 for 158$ would be a no-brainer... I thought you are talking about 200$+ OCZ/Ballistix/oc stuff...

what kind of speeds can that 2.6 do? :D

I was hoping you would respond ;)

I have another thread that deals with my other issue that maybe you could chime in on here, as it does pertain to the memory upgrade.

The MSI board this stuff is in is an OEM Medion build board. So the BIOS is nuetered.
Do you think it's worth it to spend $50-60 on a mATX 478 board that would give me the ability to OC the 2.6c and then be able to take some advantage of said PC4000 memory? Again the idea is to give this thing another 18 to 24 months of viable use as a mid level game machine and intarweb surfer ;) (I play CS:S and DOD:S and maybe BF2 and the like...nothing BRAND new that would require the latest and greatest....see Oblivion)
If you think picking up MBoard is worth it then do you have any budget level 478 mATX suggestions.

The idea was to try and get another productive 24 months for around $200. If I can take the 2.6c to the 3.2-3.5 range (with a better than OEM HSF of course...although the northwoods run nice and cool) and load up on 2gig of memory that will be useable in the next rig as well, then I would be very happy.

I eagerly await your thoughts ;)

i do think that picking up a different board and selling the one you have now or something would probably be a wise investment, because from what i remember, 2.6C's are pretty fun :D
however, my expertise in intel motherboards is EXCEPTIONALLY lacking, so i'm gonna have someone else fill in there, or you can give the mobo forum a go :D

also, i see BF2 in there. definitly a wise move going to 2x1gb then. ;)
