Memory requirements for ESXi

it will depend on how many concurrent vms you plan on running. 8gb is decent to start. 800mhz vs 1066 won't make much diff at all.
 
8gb is a great start for 2-4 simultaneous vms,

biggest bottleneck in vservers is storage i/o....

if you arent on raid, you should focus on that first

Thanks for the info. I will have 8GB at 800MHZ Then.

I will be using some random drive for the boot drive and plan to use a Dell Perc 5 with several SATA drives in raid for the storage pool, that will work correct?

Both of my ESXi boxes at home are 8GB. 4GB DIMMs are just too damn expensive right now.

Depending on what they're doing, you should be able to run 4-6 VMs comfortably on that.

Use RAID10 for your storage since that will give the best performance. RAID5 will give decent read speeds but is slower at writing.
