Memory question

I have a question/request. I come to this board looking for help after I have done what has been told not to do. I bought generic memory. I have learned my lesson and would like to move on. I am looking to O/C the system in my sig below and would like to use 1 gig of memory in dual channel, and I want it for under $200.

What do you guys think of this memory

My suggestion to you would be that unless you want a repeat of whats already happened to spend whatever it costs to get quality Mushkin, Kingston, or Corsair memory. You can get 1GB of Mushkin PC3200 lvl 1 for $218 at Newegg and Mushkins Blue line is only $200. The Blue line and other cheaper value RAM from these three makers works good just doesn't overclock as well or run as tight of timings but PC3200 is plenty fast for an AMD rig so overclockability wont be an issue and with P4 rigs its not an issue ither because you can use dividers and they dont affect performace.

Get the Mushkin. I bought it for my high end P4 rig.

I never even heard of that memory. Like the man said Mushkin

Thanks for the ideas. The only repeat would be a poor overclock  Nothing has died, I just cannot push the FSB past 180 with memory spec'd at pc3200. 180 with crappy timings is the max prime 95 stable, it has run at 210, and did not crash under normal use.

I would like to run the FSB around 200-210 with decent timings, would the Blue Line Mushkin or Kingston/Crucial value be the right call? Does the value mem run stable right up to it's rated speed or can it go just a bit over?

I guess I should also mention what I am doing with this box. I use it for internet/DVD playing/DVD writing/converting old VHS home movies to DVD @ DVD quality/video editing. Am I going in the right direction with this build? Should I have more than 1 gig? Tighter timing? Faster rated memory? With memory being the only thing you could change in the sig below, what would you do?

You'll probably benefit from bandwidth more then timings if your doing video work.

You sorta picked the wrong processor/mobo though for what your doing but it will work. A Pentium 4 w/ Hyper Threading would be alot faster for video editing.

I dont do alot of that work though so i dont know if you would benefit much from more than 1GB of memory. I would just get 1GB of PC3200 starting out and see how that goes. Maybe find someone else that does that kind of work on an Athlon XP and see how much RAM their using. Usually 1GB is plenty for most areas.

Heh heh excuse the blatant plug, but I have a gig of PC3200 DDR 400 that does 2.5-3-3 @ 2.55 volts for $200 out the door if you're interested. Video editing will require a lot of ram. Though windows mostly only registers 1.5gb at most i believe most high definition video editing requires about 2gb, but i guess that's not exactly what you're doing.

I did notice a slight boost in speed when I added a second 512 stick to get to the 1gig mark. Since they're not matched or even the mfg I'm taking a beating on the timing (3-4-4-9). Both are pc3200 but that is all they have in common. Yes I know this is my fault.

My board will take up to 3 gig of memory but only 2 gig in dual channel. If I go with (3) 512 sticks (2 in dual 1 in single) Would this give a better performance than just 1gig dual?

Does anyone know the answer to this? I am mostly interested in video editing speed and the transfer of VHS to DVD.

I found this Mushkin Ram . Would this work for what I am looking to do? How about this Corair.I hate to ask so many questions, but I just don't have all the answers.

The mushkin on Fry's is just come cheaper value RAM. Its not the good lvl 1 or lvl 2 stuff. It would be nice if they would post the models with a detailed description. Thats how places like that rip people off when they dont know what to look for.

Can't you order from Newegg? Your going to pay a premium if you dont order from somewhere like Newegg or Zipzoomfly. These other places dont even compete in prices unless they run a sale on the item.

For the best performance you would have to buy 2 512MB sticks and 1 1GB stick in order to do it that way right. Otherwise it wont perform as well. When you add more RAM to a dual channel Athlon XP board, both channels are suppost to be the same size. So if you got 2x512MB in one channel that means you need a 1GB stick in the other to match it. My suggestion to you would be just get 1GB and you really dont even need to worry about dual channel because its not going to give you any kind of real performace boost on an Athlon XP board. Dual Channel on the Athlon XP boards is nowhere close to Dual Channel on a P4 board. It pretty much doesn't do anything.

Thanks. I have narrowed it down to these two pieces.

option 1

option 2

I am still wondering if there is an advantage to more FSB speed? The price difference is not enough to make the decision for me. I understand I would have been better off using an Intel CPU, but I have been raised on AMD. :D I just want to buy the best memory to fit my needs (video editing), with my current hardware in mind. Thanks in advance. If I'm posting this in the wrong forum, would a mod move it for me :) :)

Of course there is. But you dont have to have faster speed RAM in order to achieve maximum FSB speeds. Most Athlon XP boards clock out around 200-220Mhz FSB. PC3500 would be plenty fast.

On Pentium 4 rigs it doesn't matter how high you want to go with the FSB because you can always run a 5:4 or 3:2 divider and it wont hurt performance. With AMD systems though they say you should always run 1:1 because it wont perform as well in an asynchronous ratio.

P.S. You sure have a hell of alot of smilies in your post and sig lol.

Thanks to burningrave101 and everyone else who gave an opinion. I'll go with the second option.

The :) in the sig are to break up the spec's. I had a hard time reading them with just commas, and it's my friggin rig!!

I have read the memory FAQ here, is there any other good memory FAQ's out there? How to's? I thirst for knowledge on this topic. I would like to go back to school for [H]ardware, but don't know what course to study?

Thanks again,
