Memory Question

I am about to nuke my system's hard rive and install Vista 64 Ultimate. I have an ASUS Crosshair, with a AMD 9850 and I believe the 9700 CPU fan with the 1103 bios. I want to get 8 gigs of memory but am not sure which memory to get. I went to crucial.com and had them scan my system and got a reply back saying that the fastest memory I can get is DDR2 6400 in the specs. But then under the memory slot icons it says I can use up to DDR2 8500.

Now when I go shopping on Newegg and put in my system specs it only lists the DDR2 6400 memory sticks as the max.

Can someone please let me know the highest rating stick of memory I can use for the ASUS Crosshair motherboard with the 1103 Bios?

I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you

I wish I could help you, but I'm not knowledgeable about AMD motherboards and RAM. You will be able to install PC2-8500 RAM into your motherboard, that much I know. But as far as whether the RAM will be able to run at DDR2-1066 (which is PC2-8500), or if it will be limited to just DDR2-800 (PC2-6400), that is what I don't know.

With an Intel system, you can unlink the RAM from the FSB, so you don't have to run it at a 1:1 ratio. In other words, you could run your FSB at 400 and still boost your RAM to 500Mhz (which would be a 5:4 ratio). If AMD systems are the same, then theoretically, your board can run PC2-8500 at DDR2-1066.

You couldn't possibly utilize 8 gig, I can't even utilize the 4 gig I have now

And this does not help me with my question at all. I am pretty sure I won't be able to use 8 gigs but with memory being so cheap why the hell not upgrade to 8 gigs since I can do it.

I just need to make sure on what is the max speed rated memory I can use.

Thank for not helping.

The speed of RAM you can run is limited by your motherboard, not your bios. From what I can tell your mobo maxes out with 800 speed RAM. What do you want faster than 800 for? are you doing some heavy OCing? If not 800 will be more than enough, and DDR2 RAM is backward compatible, meaning you can buy faster RAM if you want to waste the money, but it will only run at 800 speeds.

memory controller is in the cpu. the 800 limit is said for athlon but it should be stated 1066 for phenom. atleast thats whats on DFI's site.

i run 8 gigs 1066 factory settings no problem. i think the people that are having trouble are not keeping the core and northbridge voltage the same.
