What would make a memory manufacturer's stick of ram (at base settings) not compatible with a particular motherboard? Any information would be appricated!
Memory contains SPD information, which is data that the motherboard BIOS uses to work with the memory. Problems can arise from conflicts with the BIOS and SPD info.
Let's say the that very aggressive timings are used as basic SPD info. The motherboard may refuse to boot or be unstable because the BIOS was not programmed to handle the aggressive timings set by SPD.
Another issue can come from voltages. If the BIOS is set boot at 2.5v (for DDR1) and the memory wants to see 2.6v or higher to run rated speeds, you can have problems.
This is pretty simplified, but hopefully you get the idea.
