I'm building a new system

AMD64 FX55
Asus A8N-SLI Premium
1gig G.Skill 1GBGH
2x eVGA 7800GTX SLI
PCP&C 510 SLI
2x WD Raptor 74gig

In the bios, the motherboard is setting the SPD timings to 2.5 - 3 - 3 - 5 2T even though using CPU-Z, the SPD settings are 2 - 2 - 2 - 5 1T. When I manually set the correct timings, Prime95 fails after 9-14 hours. This is with a vDIMM of 2.7-2.9v. Loosening the memory timings helps, but I would like to run it at the timings I purchased it for. Any ideas?

clear the bios with the psu unplugged and battery out, then load bios defaults... save and reboot

then in the bios, manually set the timings. also, what ram slots are you using?
and for memory error checking, you should use memtest86:
http://www.memtest.org/

I've already done all that. Memtest86 runs no problems. I've let it run for 12+ hours w/o a single error. Prime95 doesn't start showing errors until about hour 12.

Unless the system shows signs of other problems, e.g. game lockups, random reboots, etc I wouldn't be crapping my pants over Prime dying after 12 hours. About the only thing I can think to double check is your temps after 12 hours of Prime. Prime stresses the whole system and you could be slowly building up heat in the case. Memtest doesn't stress everything as badly and probably would not cause a heat build-up.

video card ;)

but yeah.. this is something pretty trivial. if you're really worried about it, bump of vcore one notch and see if it lasts longer

hehe, for the duration of this thread "whole system" means CPU-Memory-HD, otherwise "entire system" should be used for CPU-Memory-HD-Video-etc. :D

heh, true. it's one thing to ponder though.. what makes case temps higher, gaming or prime95? prime should definitly get cpu temps higher.. unless the video card(s) are terribly hot :p

let's not forget the heat of the:
chipset
mosfets
fans
random on board chips like sound, usb, sata, ect

:D:D

hehe, we better slow down before we get into the metaphysical! Although it is a good thing too ponder... Prime stresses the CPU more than games (and thus likely the mosfets too), but games certainly stress a video card more. Chipset would probably be the same in both cases. And technically games would probably stress USB, sound, etc more, but their output, in either case, is so small it can be ignored.

Thus I'm forced to fall back to personal experience which notes the peak heat level of a Prime test is typically the same as a long gaming session.

agreed

I've narrowed down the problem to the Command Rate. I cannot get this memory to run stable at a Command Rate of 1T. I have to lower it to 2T to get things to work right. Would this be a RAM problem, memory controller problem, or motherboard issue?

Going out, forgetting to turn the A/C on for the day, leaving it folding, and coming home to find magic smoke escaping out the back... ;)

you have 2x512mb, yes? i think in your case, it's a mobo issue. the asus is somewhat known for this

I have tried both the latest stable bios (1005) and the latest beta bios (1006.004). I have cleared the CMOS and removed the battery for both flashes and I flashed in a DOS environment using AWDFLASH.

my RAM sticks are in the two blue slots as indicated by the motherboard manual. These are the two closest slots to the processor that work together in dual channel mode.

well.. this is one of those things where you try what you can to see if it works. check the first line in my sig ;)

basically, there's a chance that slots 2+4 may work better. probably not, but you won't know until you try
