Any idea when memory prices for DDR3 chips are set to start going back down again? I almost bought a 4gb kit for my MBP over the summer but decided against it when the price went up to $65 oh no. Now they're hovering around $100...
 
i dunno, but i'm wondering whytf prices for a ddr 2 8 gig kit is almost the same as a ddr3 kit still
 
In my opinion DDR2 prices are not going back down. I expect these to go up as DDR2 becomes used less and production declines.

DDR3 probably will not go down for some time as well. This depends highly on the global economic situation. When the global economy recovers there will be a shortage of DDR3 and prices may likely go up.
 
I think we're coming from a period of overly deflated RAM prices, for BOTH DDR2 and DDR3, due to an expected high demand of memory. If that's true, demand was lower than expected and now memory companies are dying and prices are actually going back to normal.
 
DDR2 production capacity was totally out of whack with demand in this past 18 months or so. As others have noted, DDR2 is on it's way out and DDR3 is taking it's place. Manufacturers, having been burned a bit on DDR2, are being a little more cautious with their DDR3 plans. I don't expect DDR3 to drop below about $17.50 a gig for at least the next 6 months. Best case, it's hanging out around $20 per gig on the low end right now. You can do better in some cases, but if you want fast or low latency or both, you're going to pay for it for a while ($28 per gig and up).
 
imho, some of this has to do with win7 release...ppl are going to 64 bit to use full potential of their available mem on motherboard with win7...2gb to 4gb and beyond. this may also keep mem prices relatively high for the near term (along with the other factors mentioned above).

i have an asus p5k board with 4x1gb ddr2 (8gb board capacity but would have to swap out all 4 mem banks to get the whole 8gb)...it would be worth my while to just get a new mobo 1 or 2nd quarter next year and go to ddr3 w 3x2gb ddr3 triple channel board...with room to expand to 6x2gb ddr3 (prices appear to be closing between ddr2 and 3 already with the crossing point sometime in 2010)...
