Memory not allowing me to overclock?

Hey everyone!

I'm playing around with a PC of my friends..

Here are the specs:

Xeon x3220 ES
nVidia 680i LT
OCZ Flex EX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1200 (PC2 9600)

I'm not able to overclock at all. When I raise the FSB the computer wont boot. He thinks its because we need to use different memory.
 
How much are you raising the FSB?

It could be the memory, the processor or the motherboard itself.
 
I had it at 1250. It should be able to do that just fine I thought.
 
Hm I guess it could be the motherboard. I read somewhere that evga made a board specifically to OC the quad core CPU's. I'm not even sure what the brand is though, as it has no labels and all cpuz says is nVidia 680iLT Rev A2

Alright i'm going to swap the processor with a c2d I have and see if its because the board I happen to have doesnt work well with quad. I'll post back later tonight or tomorrow :)

you set the ram to 1:1 timing correct?

now where im lost is.. you have the FSB set at 1250? or the rams running at 1250?.. because if the FSB is at 1250.. then your ram is running at 1250mhz or DDR2 2500 which would be well over twice what that ram runs at..
 
No i set them to "unlinked". And when I put 1250 it sets the ram to 1250, which I didnt think was bad because this ram is 1200. When something doesnt work and it resets to default it puts the FSB at 800 and the RAM to 800.
 
You need to get your RAM speeds UNDER what they are rated for. You find out what kind of envelope you have to push them farther after you've got everything else setup. You are just going about things a bit backwards. Linked or Linked & Synced modes work best for overclocking 680i's in general. Unlinked doesn't always get you good results. You should also probably be less concerned with memory clocks and more concerned with FSB clocks if your actual goal is more performance.
 
Alright. I'm going to put the RAM I have at 800 and start from there. Right now I'm sitting at 3.2ghz.
