So, I'm about ready to pull my hair out after reading for a few days on the differences between certain memory modules and mobo compatibility. Essentially, I'm building a nice new Core-i7 gaming desktop. I'm eying the Gigabyte P55A-UD6, but I'm also considering the GA-P55-UD3R. There is a $120 difference so if I can get away with the UD3R and still get nice RAM, I'd like to do that.
Anyways, my problem is what type of memory to buy. I was originally just going to get a 6gb kit of Corsair XMS3's. Then I read that the P55 chip is dual channel instead of triple, so now I either have to buy 4gb or 8gb. So, now I'm trying to figure out first, if the difference between have 4gb and 8gb is worth the price differential (roughly $100 or more) and second, I don't know what speed of ram to buy. The P55 chipset only supports DDR3 2200/1333/1066/800 rated ram. I was originally eyeing 1600mhz but now that it's not 'compatible' I have to either drop to 1333mhz or bump all the way up to 2200mhz. Is the speed difference from 1600mhz to 1333mhz that big of a deal? Also, I've seen some RAM that is specifically stated as compatible with P55 chipsets. Do I need to buy ram that blatantly states compatibility or will most any DDR3 memory work?
Sorry for all the questions, but I am literally a newb when it comes to memory (ie. timing, mhz, etc etc).
