Memory for DELL Optiplex 755 mini tower

Hello,
I am going to school online and most students are required to go to a store and research, but I am disabled and cannot get out and do that.
I am supposed to find two types of memory for the DELL Optiplex 755 Mini Tower. I am also supposed to find two CPUs that are compatible with this computer. I have not even started that yet. I am still working on the memory, but if anyone wants to help with two compatible CPU's, I would sure appreciate it.

I am supposed to give all the information below about each type of memory:

Brand or Manufacturer:

Model ( I would think this would be the part number but I am not sure )

Type: ( I do not know if this means like DDR, DDR2, etc., or if it means like PC2-8400, PC2-8500 etc. or if it means something entirely different than either of these ).

Speed: ( I am assuming this is like 800 MHz for the PC2-6400 and 1066 MHz for the PC2-8500).

GB per module: ( I am assuming this is like 1 GB or 2 GB per memory stick )

Number of modules: ( I am assuming this is number of sticks of RAM ).

Other ( I would assume this is like the 240 pins )


Can anyone help me? I am new to forums, so please forgive me if I post this in the wrong place. I just hope if someone replies, I will get an email so I will know where to find their response.

It looks like DDR2 PC6400 MAX (which I would expect since PC8500 is for overclocked ram) and also 2GB modules max and 1.8V.

Thanks for the link. Crucial is the one that said PC2-8500 was guaranteed to work with the DELL optiplex 755. Are you saying it will not work?

Am I misunderstanding what it says. It looks like it guarantees it to work wiht the mini tower.

So you too are saying the PC2 8500 will not work?

How can you tell when it says compatible? How do you know the PC2-8500 is not compatible when it has a checkmark saying it is? What does overclock mean?
I checked out your link but I am still confused. Are all the processors under MT compatible with the motherboard in the DELL Optiplex 755 mini tower? Or just the ones in the first section? Which two besides the ogm819 that it comes with, would give it the most speed and still be compatible with the OGM819 LGA775 motherboard?

How can I tell what is compatible? When buying my CPU, what do I look for in the motherboard specs to make sure my motherboard can handle the CPU I choose?

Boy, I just do not understand this. My choice for a major would have been graphics becasue I love them and have done them. Taking a computer apart and rebuilding it is not what I thought this class would be about. Strange, but I thought I was going to learn about software? I was told by my enrollment officer that graphics was not a good subject to make money from home and since I am disabled, I have to work from home if I am going to work at all.

I got a optiplex 745 lying in the back and it runs fine on
PC2-6400 DDR2-SDRAM UDIMM and PC2-5300 DDR2-SDRAM UDIMM. The first is a 2GB stick the latter is 2 512mb sticks that was lying around
So get PC2-6400 DDR2 and you will be fine

Actually, what he's saying is that the PC2-8500 will not run at its advertised speed in any non-tweakable OEM system such as that Optiplex. The memory will run at a lower PC2-6400 (or PC2-5300) speed on such a system.

Hello,
I understand that buying more than 4 GB of RAM is wasteful becasue 32 bit win will not use it. I am confused. Why make a computer that will hold 8 GB of RAM and then put an operating system on it that will only use 3.? GB?

I am trying to upgrade the DELL optiplex for my assignment this week. I have to find CPUs that are compatible but cost under $180. I am about at my wits end with this.

What would you suggest? I kthink the 2 core quad Q6700 would work, but the only ones I can find within the price range my instructor allows are more than $180 unless they are used. I am not sure it works. Someone here yesterday sent me a chart but I am having a hard time with it too. Does every computer listed under the MT work with the DELL optiplex 755 mini tower? what does the XGSP mean. Would those work for an upgrade on the same computer?

Boy, I guess you can tell I am dumber than an ox when it comes to computers. Graphics is my thing, according to my enrollment rep, there is not money in that when you have to work from home. She said Information technology would work best for my situation. So here I am trying to learn something that I know nothing, and I do mean NOTHING about.

So it would be a waste to buy the the 8500 even though it is compatible, right.
I am learning a little between this forum and my class.
I found one cpu so far to upgrade with and that is the Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E7500
(3M Cache, 2.93 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)

I have to find two under $180 each. So I have one to go but now it will be easier becasue I finally learned what to look for when purchasing one, and that is the socket number to match the motherboard and the FSB not going over what the motherboard allows.

You all have been great. I will be back, I am sure as I have several classes left in IT.

What does type mean? Is that the DDR or the PC2-number?
