Here's my situation:

I have a ms p67 gd55 mobo and runs ram at 1333 default.

My ram (2 sticks of 2 GB) are Corsair XMS 1600s

My CPU (SB 2600K) is OC'd to 4.5Ghz

I'm wondering, what are the pros and cons of running the memory at a the higher rated speed? And how do I go about doing it? Never played with memory freqs before. (Yes, I'm one of those noobs that just flick the muliplier on a CPU to get an OC without getting my hands dirty!)

For example will it make the CPU OC less stable? What other things do I have to think of, like do I need to tweak voltages for the ram?

Sorry, I'm a bit clueless :(
 
Pros:
-Higher bandwidth and lower latency.
-Possibly shorter loading time due to the above.
Cons:
-Memory requires higher voltage.
-They might get hotter
-Due to higher voltage required,the Intergrated Memory Control (IMC) on your CPU might get hotter,giving you higher CPU temp.

Since your RAM are rated at 1600MHz and you're using the Sandy Bridge platfrom,i think you can run it at 1866MHz with no trouble.But don't take my word for it.

RAM OCing doesn't affect CPU stability,but it can cause your PC to crash or hard lock.
When OCing RAM,just pay attention to your RAM frequency,voltage and timing.Loosening the timing would help you to achieve higher frequency.
 
Overclocking ram on the iCores (1156 and 1155 sockets) can affect stability due to the IMC (especially if more VTT), even if it is simply raising DRAM Voltage.
 
There are so few noticable benefits from overclocked RAM that it's [H]ardly worth the trouble at all.

I can't even tell the different between running my RAM at it's "rated" 7-7-7-20 @ 1333 vs the default 9-9-9-24 unless I run a RAM benchmark
 
Well I'm running the ram now at 1600, but mannually set the voltage to 1.55 even though they are rated at 1.65. 50 runs of IBT and they seem stable, but will monitor it a bit longer. Didn't change the volts to the IMC so temps seem unaffected for the CPU.

Sure enough the benchies have improved, but nothing else... well I guess it doesn't hurt to have it at the higher speed
