Memory amount vs. Clock speed

For the first time ever I have the opportunity to upgrade my video card. I currently have an Asylum GeForce FX 5200 Ultra oc'ed to 345/712 or so with Coolbits. The two cards I am looking at are the 6600gt and the 6800gt, but I have a question.

Should I go with more memory on the card (256MB versus 128MB) or go with the faster clock speed (XFX 6600gt has 500/1000 versus the 6800gt's 350/1000)?

The game I typically play on my PC at the moment is Final Fantasy XI and at 1280x1024 I have to turn some of the settings down (including AA and AF to off) in order to play. My current budget is capped at $400. The recommended upgrade post gave me a good indication of what is out there in that price range, and so far the XFX 6600gt has been the most appealing, but the memory question still looms. My system specs are below:

Sony Vaio RS320
P4 2.6GHz
1GB PC3200 DDR RAM
GeForce FX5200 Ultra (128MB)
Syncmaster 955DF 19" Monitor

Thanks!

6800GT all around faster than 6600GT

The 6800GT is based off the 6800 core, which makes comparing clock speeds like comparing apples and oranges.

Combine that with the fact that the 6800Gt has a 256-bit bus compared the 128-bt of the 6600GT.

So in short the 6800GT stomps the 6600GT

Neither of those are particularly good things to use as comparision factors when comparing different models of video card. For example, you can get 256MB 5200s and 9250s but a 64MB Ti4200 will mop the floor with them. Clock speed's not a terribly reliable when comparing different chips either - graphics processors are highly parallel & often vary widely between high and low-end chip as to the degree of parallelism.

This is why we're stuck trying to interpret benchmarks.

As for your question about what to buy, the 6800GT is going to beat the 6600GT hands down. Granted, coming from a 5200, you'd probably be blown away by the performance of the 6600GT; it's an amazing card for the price.

To help you out a bit I'll download the FFXI benchmark & tell you my results - maybe a few other people will be willing to do the same?

I didn't know there were FFXI benchmarks! Let me know where you find them and I will test out my 5200U for comparison.

Thanks for the input, I look forward to see the results!

Cool! I'm in the KnightsofAltana LS on Remora, Elvaan 30BRD/15WHM is my primary char.

Thanks for the links, I'll try it out with my 5200U and see what happens!

6419 on low
4368 on high

AA/AF set to application controlled

A64 2800 @ 1890MHz
1GB PC3200
6800NU @ 370/790, fully unlocked

Anyone out there in ATI-land going to toss out some numbers?

I'll post my numbers tonight...the bench software is freakin huge so it's taking a little while to download since my cable is not running at full speed.

I just updated my drivers to 71.84 so we'll see what happens. Thanks for the numbers ameoba!

Edit: Name correction

Like they said, 6800GT.

Better yet, see if you can find a card to go in between your FX and the 68, something even slower than your 5200! That way you'll appreciate the growth just THAT much more!

I jest. Get the 6800 and prepare to be blown away.

I would give out some numbers but I dont have the game Wish i had it but I want WOW, StarWars Galaxies and FFXI but their Online Server Fees are something of which I dont like which Is why I stay away. Also I know why they have Fees maitenance and what not Im not complaining Im just not buying.

cool like i said if you play FFXI for PC set you AF to max it helps a lot :D

Don't need to be a member to run the benchmark - it's stand-alone software. Just google for "FFXI Benchmark".

Ok the 71.84 drivers suck.

Reinstalled 66.93 and ran the low benchmark. I ended up with 4834 so pretty crappy. Then I tried to run the Demonstration my computer spontaneously rebooted. I tried again and the same thing.

Oh well, as soon as the tax refund comes in I'm going straight for the 6800GT.
