Hey guys, one of my OCZ sticks went bad (failing memtest) in my main Rig, I am looking to replace it and possibly even jump up to 8GB.

I am looking at these

CORSAIR DOMINATOR with DHX Technology TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF 4GB PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066) DDR2 Memory Retail

CORSAIR TWIN2X4096-8500C5D 4GB PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066) DDR2 Memory Retail

One says it runs 5-5-5-18 and the other 5-5-5-12, but they are the same PN except one has an addition of a fan, but yet with the fan it runs more relaxed timing. What do you guys think?

Also do you think they will run fine with 2 sets?

I realize I probably don't need 1066 with my Q6600@3.6Ghz, but I may also be looking to swap that out as well.

I know OCZ has lifetime warrenty but I got these sticks 2nd hand and don't have receipts. I am starting to build quite a collection of ram, what do you guys do with your ram that you no longer use?

Thank you in advance.

I believe they are the same, but one comes with the fan. I think the timings are 5-5-5-15-2T.

I'm running 8GB of these right now. When running 4 sticks you will likely need more voltage to your northbridge from stock and might run into some heat issues with the memory since they are now closer together. I've found the 2GB sticks of Dominators PC8500's to run relatively cool though compared to the 1GB version that used Micron chips (very hot). I'm not sure the fan is necessary. They didn't seem to get that hot when I memtested them.

The dominator fan looks cool, but the fans it comes with are grabage. They make buzzing noise and are very annoying. I have two of these fans and both had the issue and most people on newegg complain about the same thing. I still use the fan kit though, but I replaced the fans and reduced the voltage to 6v. Its now quiet and still cools the ram enough.

I'm running a Q6600 at 3.6 as well and you can take advantage of the 1066 speed. I'm running 8x450 and memory is set to 1080.

Oh and if the ram has a rebate with a limit of 1 then it could be worth it to buy one of each kit. That way you have a fan just in case and can take advantage of both rebates.

Ok I think I will go without the fan, do you guys know of another ram cooling solution? if its needed.

Also if I need to increase the northbridge voltage (which I think I already have.. will have to check when I get home) my mobo comes with a fan already on that chip, so it should be fine. Do any of you know off hand what the max temp should be?

Go for the Dominators the cooling design is more than just a heat spreader slapped on. The PCB design works with heat spreader/sink. Plus they look awesome. Thought they could use some LEDs! ;)

What are you talking about

The memory listed in your first 2 links cost more than the final price of the 8500D Dominators.

Thats because mail in rebates suck balls. I acctually avoid products that use them. I picked up 2 kits of the G.Skills that he linked to when they were $50 shipped and they are running great on my P5Q D at 1068mhz 5-5-5-15 pl8. They can do more but thats alot to ask with 4 sticks and an oced quad on my board.

$54 after MIR that will probably take 3 months, great deal.

I guess to rebate or not to rebate is up to the OP in this thread isn't it? He asked for product specifications and an opinion on performance.

I gave him my opinion. Corsair ram is overpriced, imo. I bought those Gskill sticks for $50 shipped and they work great. What are those dominators powerchip ICs? I doub't that they oc any better than the ram I'm using now. I'll admit that the dominators run cooler but are heatspreaders really worth that much more money?

I just found this searching around for an alternative to the noisy (and sometimes defective) fans the ram comes with, does anyone have any experience using this updated version?

Oh BTW, I have an 120mm UltraKaze running in my case, so I am sure that thing is probably louder then anything else in the case.

and about the price... rebates are not an issue for me, $53.89 shipped (after MIR) vs $58.99 shipped, really not a big difference how is that overpriced?, shit take away the $20 MIR, heat spreaders are worth $20 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233034

Thats the new fan kit for DDR3 boards with 6 ram slots. It will probably work though since the DDR2 and DDR3 are the same size. It should be better though since the fans are bigger then the tiny 40mm units. It might not be centered on ram if it runs into the cpu heatsink, but should still work fine.

As for the whole rebate thing, I think rebate is worth it for the better cooling. Its not the end all, but its helps.

Rebate processing seems to be better than it used to be because 4-5 years ago, my average rebate took about 8-12 weeks, but now 6-8 weeks is more typical, and my problem rate (rebates over 30 days late or required contact with the rebate company) has dropped from about 25% to 5%.

I don't want to turn this thread into a rebate debate so I'll leave it at this; keep copies of EVERYTHING and if you have an issue getting your rebate, I'll handle it.

I literally just installed mine in my sig rig about an hour ago since having all 4 slots taken up on my motherboard tends to make the RAM feel a bit uncomfortably warm. At full blast, this cooler is LOUD! I have it hooked up to my Scythe Kaze Master Ace fan controller and it's reading around 3780RPM at full load! So no doubt, this thing is blowing a ton of air onto the RAM, keeping them all nice and cool. However, there seems to be a lot of bearing noise (sounds pretty high pitched, almost shrill) in combination with the high pitched "whooshing" of air, easily making this the loudest component in my setup.

Interestingly, I have found that running this at full blast, for my setup, inadvertently created a side benefit, which is that the extra airflow that's blowing down onto the RAM also spills over and helps to cool down the northbridge too. Considering that my motherboard's northbridge is passively cooled, any extra airflow it can get goes a long way.

However, the shrillness has proven to be intolerable already. Undervolting it seems to help a good amount (at around ~3000RPM) by lessening the intensity of the airflow noise, but the bearing noise is still present and never really goes away unless the unit is completely turned off. :( In my VERY limited hour of testing, personally, on my setup, the compromise seems to be at ~2000RPM where the noise is tolerable and cools at an acceptable (read: better than nothing) level.

So my experience thus far is that this unit definitely is NOT quiet by any means. However, it does make up for it by offering VERY good cooling performance. Putting my fingers behind the fans, feeling a good amount of airflow and feeling how cool (literally!) my RAM's heatspreaders are confirms this. Basically if you have a fan controller you are in a good position to find for yourself where the middle-ground between tolerance for noise and acceptability for performance lies. If you don't have one though, you're going to have to ask yourself what's more important, cooling performance or your hearing. :D

Hopefully this can be of some help!
