[UPDATE] with the help of one forumer I was able to fix it by removing the glue which have turned corrosive and shorted some components. as predicted the components turns out to be some capacitors near 3 transistors at the corner of the SMPS. removed the glue and patch the broken PCB tracks, all as good as new. installed 2x 80mm fan at the back and side port to help dissipate heat from this notorious speaker.

hey guys, i saw a very nice and informative thread regarding the repair of dead promedia ultra 5.1 here. i hope some of you could assist me with my problem.

i have one megaworks 550 system which is not yet dead, but crackle and pops every few seconds or so. all the 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer sound perfectly and the remote is also functional. the LED behind subwoofer flickers as the speaker pops, regardless whether the power is on / off in the remote control.

so i opened up the subwoofer and take a look around. so far nothing stands out, except for the fact there are so many little caps inside this thing. there are 4 big caps in the power supply board (1000uF 100V, 33uF 450V and 2x 680uF 200V). the rest are more or less very similar to each other i can't get a clean look at it since they are very small.

last year my klipsch speaker also have very similar issue (popping crackling) and it turns out only one capacitor and broken cable are the culprit. so i thought maybe i still be able to save this megaworks. basically i don't know where to start testing. any ideas? TIA

Not to shoot down Hard Forum or anything but this is something probably better suited for a different website... preferably an audiophile site like audio karma... only down side is that people might have the tendency to say BAD things about your audio setup and just tell you to buy new... That being said i would say contact Creative.
 
well you may be right. i finally sent it for repair i hope someone can identify the culprit.

i did a little more research, and it turns out that the for the Creative S750, many said that the 68uF 450V caps prone to overheat and fail, causing the blinking / flickering led behind the subwoofer. since the 550 also have a 33uF 450V, it definitely need to be checked.

hope this thread might be useful for someone in the future.
