Meetings Make You Dumber

If you’ve ever been stuck in a meeting at work…you already know the outcome of this study. I have a feeling a few of you will be forwarding this to your boss or supervisor right after you read this.

People have a harder time coming up with alternative solutions to a problem when they are part of a group, new research suggests.

As a corporate worker, I want to have a meeting to validate this story about meetings. I'll call a meeting to discuss when when it should take place. Thank you. :)

Yeah, this is a no brainer (no pun intended). I tend to find it easier to go with what the group's opinion is, as usually you end up fighting tooth and nail for your point to matter, and in the end you may have been right. But I subscribe to the idea of people learning by falling on thier own sword. Just easier to go with the flow, do your job, and let someone else look like an idiot.

That's exactly why startups usually come up with great ideas big corps didn't think about.

There is two sides to the argument that meeting makes you dumber...
(maybe there are two sides to everything?)
I have worked in places where a meeting was about as productive as a bought of
constipation (aka not much came out of it...) I was dumber for attending... and older.

My current job (and boss - mostly my boss) has produced the meeting I don't want to
miss. Every Friday I look forward to 9:00AM.

Our meetings begin as all others,

An uncomfortable room with a dark table, two dozen uncomfortable chairs, lots of wires
one of those giant pads (I hate when people use these - as boring as power point -
except for once... another great story though) and some markers. But that is where the
boring ends. We get the real news, release periods, objectives in around
15 minutes. This meeting is covered in company sarcasm (the beauty of good sarcasm
is that it is rooted in truth) and involves several expletives (referring to the many delays
and BAFOONS we deal with). And ends in discussions about whats going on in the
office's many families.
Never more than an hour these meetings have honestly become a grande finale to
a work week. I come out more informed and in the best spirits of the week. Honestly, I
would go into work on a day off for this one hour

Now before you guys say, "You must be Steve Ballmer!", I am not. I am a pion in a
decent company that is still small enough to help customers and not to big to be stuck
on it's self. If you can find a job where the meetings are cool, stay with it.

My IQ increases every Friday ;)
