Could someone care to elaborate on what's the best benchmark result to look for when buying a SSD.

For someone who's gonna use it mainly as OS drive & games. I currently use raid0 with 2 WD500 black and use another PC as server for storage on a gbit network.

So basically my main use would consist of playing games, browsing the web, extracting ISO from the server & install them.. normal use !

It already take me about 3min to extract a 4.7gb from the server to the main PC.

So would someone mind to explain what to look for in bench stats and what's it's actually gonna change.

I can understand it does 500megs read\write or so .. but you never gonna see those number copying something from\to SATA2 HD.

I currently copy stuff from the main pc raid0 to the server at over 150megs/sec..

I was currently looking for a Samsung 840 pro 256gb or a Mushkin Deluxe DX 240gb.

I know the samsung is faster then the Mushkin but for the use and reliability is it really worth the 80$ extra. Would i see a gain between those 2.

SSD would be use on a SATA3. P67 board. Intel chipset.

Bottom Line, no you would not perceive the difference between the Samsung and Mushkin you mention. Benchmarks may show differences here and there.

I can't speak to reliability but I have a feeling I would lean towards the Samsung from having used an 830 Pro of theirs for a while.

The situation you speak of, extracting an ISO from your server has no bearing on the Hard Drives you are using since you are limited by your network.

I wouldn't care much about benchs really, but rather buy a recommended drive, and not one too new.

Usually you'll be directed to the M4 or the Samsung 830, buying something "better" will only cost you more with no real benefit, and if by now you don't have an SSD then I'm guessing you don't have money to waste.

You really won't see a difference day to day between to decent SSD's that are relatively modern.

Look for the best deals on the 'go-to' brands. I really like the Crucial M4's because they can be had for a decent price usually and are decently fast. The Samsungs are excellent drives as well the 830/840's go on sale weekly at Newegg. I don't have experience with the Mushkin Chronos but they are a decent brand and I know some [H] Users have them.

I had some bad luck with the M4 512GB drives. But oddly I think it really was just bad luck. My new drives have been going strong for a while now, and they are lightning quick. I hear the Samsungs are just as good. IMO when it takes longer for the BIOS to post than it does to fully boot into windows - you've pretty much hit the point where "top end" really doesn't matter on an SSD anymore. I'd just go for quality models that aren't serial number #1 and you'll be good - especially for day to day use...
