media server setup questions

i have two computers; one in the bedroom and the other in the living room. they're both htpcs, only difference is i'm trying to setup the bedroom one as the media server.

i have a linksys wireless g router and both comptuers have linksys wireless g pci cards. i've setup the home network and both computers can access files from each other.

i'm using beyond tv 4 on both. i'd like for the living room htpc to play hdtv videos from the media server over the wireless connection.

while it does "work", the video lags heavily. i have an "excellent" 54g connection on both computers, yet the video is unwatchable.

i tried using an ethernet cable to connect the two computers tonight, but that didn't make any difference. would i need a crossover cable for that?

this is my first attempt at setting up a media server so your help is appreciated.

HD is not going to work well over wireless. as for connecting the 2, are you going with a direct connection, no router? if so a crossover cable is needed.

yeah, i tried using an ethernet cable two connect the two pcs directly. i'll order a crossover cable. thanks.

i bought a "crossover (reverse) patch" cable today.

i disabled wireless on both computers and connected them via the crossover cable.

when i tried to access the other computer in explorer i get this error message:

\\Mediaserver\My Videos is not accessible. You might not haver permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows help.

the reason i bought the crossover cable is because the media server is closer to the living room computer than the router is. i could connect them both to ethernet cables, but that would mean buying two fairly long ethernet cables.

is there a way to get this to work with the crossover cable?

54g and HDTV = bad.

I am waiting on someone to try the N draft to see if HDTV could be streamed wireless.

you'll need to set static ip addresses for the wired nics on both machines

start->control pannel-> network connections
right click on local area connection -> properties

highlight tcp/ip and click properties
change it to "use following ip address"

i'd just start simple - for one 10.0.0.1 and the other 1.0.0.2 with a subnet of 255.255.0.0 on both

then try it with the crossover cable.
