So I have this little SFF PC someone gave me when I purchased their two used 2TB Seagate St2000DM001 drives from them. All of this for $100. Nice.

It kind of looks like a shuttle PC with 2 hot swap days in front.

I'd like to run a Serviio Server for my Sony SMP-N200.

Intel® Atom N270 ( 1.6 GHz ) processor @ 533 MHz FSB
1GB RAM
Intel® 82574L Gigabit Ethernet
Intel® 945GSE & ICH7M
512mb compact flash SSD

What OS can I put on here?
What can fit on that 512MB SSD?
I am assuming I will need to boot off of a USB flashdrive to get it installed.
Windows Home Server sounds more up my alley if possible....
 
Linux, freebsd or versions of solaris can be made to fit on a 512MB flash disk. I do not think any version of windows would fit though.
 
Windows will never fit in 512MB. My Home Server 2011 build with Servio uses 35GB. Are you connecting some data drives? Install the OS there instead.
 
Looks like there are linux versions of servio, but even then, it wont run well in 512MB - it needs more than that to do transcode caching.

512MB as an OS drive just isn't going to cut it. You could install the OS *onto* a USB pen drive - an 8GB or 16GB one is super cheap nowdays. Sure, it'd probably die after a couple of years of writes, but heck, just make a clone. Wouldn't do it for anything mission critical, but as a boot drive for a media server (with the catalog presumably saved with the data itself), it's probably not a big deal.

That's the cheap ($20) idea, anyway...
 
BTW, even on a mini linux install I would replace the CF drive with a much larger one to increase write endurance.
 
nas4free I believe would fit on that, I'm not positive though. Don't be afraid to install windows on one of the spinning disks if thats what you're comfortable with. I did the same thing with a nettop like what you have and it worked really well, easy to admin ,etc.
 
Thanks guys. I will just install a windows is on another data drive. Which one though? goal is to run serviio. Hopefully can stream 1080p mkv or avi?
 
Another option. I have my old 680i Asus p5n32-e sli with 4gb ram. I just need to find a respectable psu
I have an old super LAN boy case lol .
I need to research PSUs.
I am also considering a synology ds211j.
 
Any hard drive will be fine for streaming. If you want to transcode though, that poor Atom is not gonna work.

I wonder if the sony n200 will play with serviio transcoding off? Is that what I need to know?
 
I have no issues streaming 720p mkv files to my SMP-N200 via Serviio with transcoding off. I'm sure that I have streamed 1080p as well (just to see what it looked like), but I run mine wireless, and 1080p stutters at times, so I stick to 720p.
