Mechanical Keyboard Guide

Any proof to back that statement up?

Everything I have read online indicates that BW is made by iOne.

My blackwidow ultimate is really awesome. I have no issues with the glossiness or fingerprints. It's not that glossy and I only put my fingers on the actual keycaps, not the body of the keyboard.

The only issue I have is that it is too quiet. I thought blues were supposed to be loud but the BW in comparison has some deaded feel and sound to it that feels less crisp. I wanted a loud and clicky keyboard like the mechanicals I used at the library in the 80s/90s :)

Just want to ask again before I RMA my Filco. One of the keys do not activate unless I press down with a little more force. I can press the entire key down in a normal fashion, but it will not activate until I press down even more. Can I fix this somehow or am I out of luck?

I don't know how to fic it, but I've seen many people repair switch issues with their FIlco's.
Go over to Geekhack.org and the members over there should be able to help you.

Alright, thank you for the tip. I'm actually liking the brown switch a lot right now so it would suck if I had to send it back regardless.

From what I understand you would have to desolder the switch from the board to fix it. Have you tried just resitting the keycap?

Yeah have you popped the key off and tried blowing the mechanism out with some compressed air, etc?

Yes, I went to the geekhack forums and I was told to try blowing air into the switch. I don't have any compressed air, so I just blew into it. This worked, but the problem seems to come back after a short while, so I'm going to try compressed air.

I have pretty much decided that I'm going to return my Filco (brown switches), in part because of the one (somewhat) faulty switch and in part because I think I'll be better off with the black switches. I seem to type very "hard" and always bottom out, which is what gave me the impression that the brown switches are loud.

I feel like I did enough research before I made my purchase. Oh well no harm done.

EDIT: I would like to add though that my experience with the Filco so far has been excellent, and the build quality is tremendous. I don't even want to use it because it's so impressive. :p

ordered my KBC poker with cherry reds last night. Very excited. Just waiting for qtan to process it.

Hey WorldExclusive, how long did yours take to ship?

also, where can i find these o-rings?

O-rings

I also recommend getting a WASD cluster. My PBT keys wore pretty quickly.
http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/keycap-sets.html

It took about 3-4 days to ship. They arrive from Asia to USA, then he ships them again to you.
Takes up to 10 business days.

really? I thought the pbt was supposed to wear slower.

Well i have some extra black caps from my Das because i replaced them with the green ones, i'll throw those down if the wear gets bed.

Anyways, super cool, and thanks so much for the info. I'll be ordering those rings pronto.

So it seems:

Some common mechanical keyboard brands include Filco, SteelSeries, XArmor, Optimus, Das Keyboard, and Ducky. Keep in mind that while there are many brands, almost all of their keyboards are produced by iOne, Datacomp, or Costar with a few exceptions. In our situation, Razer’s BlackWidow and BlackWidow Ultimate are produced by iOne who also produces the XArmor line of mechanical keyboards.

I just got this keyboard. Love it so far, but I find it loud. Clicketyclack... :p

Just received my WASD with brown switches. The quality of the board is amazing. It's on par with Deck.
I've never owned a Filco but I'm sure it compares in quality and exceeds it in customization.
The weight is solid, keystrokes are butter smooth, the looks are great. If you decide to buy one, you'll be impressed.

I'm very satisfied with this board. 5 stars.

Hmm, Amazon doesn't seem to have any Filcos with blue switches anymore, even though The Keyboard Company does (but shipping from them is a killer). Might go with a semi-custom from WASD keyboards instead.

I'm thinking of going with a semi-custom from WASD myself. I want to buy a full sized board with MX browns and WASD sounds like the way to go especially now that they have lasered keycaps.

There isn't anything that I want from the full customization that I can't get from a semi-custom. I just want a board with MX browns, white or maybe gray lasered keycaps, and a red escape key.

Its the keycaps that are a tough decision for me. I've always said that I've wanted unicomp style gray keycaps for a cherry MX board. These aren't PBT and they don't have sparkles but that might be as close as I'll ever find. On the other hand I really like the pictures that I have seen of the white lasered pbt keycaps on filco boards. I also like black but they tend to show shine more easily than gray or white caps and the lettering doesn't hold up as well.

That is one sweet keyboard. Kudos to the colors :)

That is what cost you the extra 20 bucks?

Not just the colors but also custom lettering and symbols. You can label a key anything.

An extra $20 can get you this level of customization:

This person provided the layout and lettering, then WASD did the rest.

These WASD keyboards look nice..might consider them after I get the Leopold Tactile Touch "Otaku" Keyboard with browns(FC500RT/ABN)..anyone own this keyboard?

I have the Leopold Tenkeyless with cherry mx blues "Otaku" and it is worth the investment. Detachable usb cable, keyboard is very sturdy, and the non printed layout is very easy to get used to. I also noticed my WPM increased by ten coming from a rubber dome keyboard.

Guys I just noticed that my Razer BW up arrow is not registering. The key looks fine, but it does not work. With there being no stock anywhere, can I fix this myself. I really like the keyboard but I don't I think I can wait.

EDIT** I just returned it for a full refund at Fry's. I could not bring myself to buy another membrane type keyboard. Going to do my homework to find which mechanical keyboard I want to buy

I just ordered a Leopold with Brown switches. I wish I saw the WSAD keyboards first though, It would have been nice to be able to pick some colors.

Well I just wanted to post that I got a second Blackwidow from Micro Center at it to has a bad key. The frecking numlock key does not work. Nice Q/C Razer

Back it goes and I think I am going to order the Rosewill Cherry Blue or red.

I'm looking to buy a new keyboard. I currently have a Logitech Illuminated, which I love (very good quality scissor switches). I have one of the early run ones without any real ghosting issues. It's really quiet too, which I like. I just have an itching for something new.

I'm debating between Cherry Browns and Topre Capacitives at the moment...any thoughts?

I really like the browns, Torpes are great if you have the cash. I think browns are the best on a budget.

Just to get an idea, will both the browns and Topre have lower actuation force than membrane keyboards?

Also, would you say the Topres are a clear upgrade over the browns? Or more of a sidegrade? I still have yet to try any mechanicals in person...it would be great to get an idea what I'm getting myself into.

Torpes have different models with varying force. You'll have to do some research to find the model that's right for you.
Read up on the guide in the OP and go to GeekHack and ask a few questions in the forums.

I placed an order for a semi-custom on Saturday. I had never expected to receive my tracking info today, thats nuts. To be honest I'm excited. Hopefully I'll see it this week but with UPS you never know.
