so my 400 gig backup external failed....my roomate said he didn't do anything but ya. I would like to know if there are any services that I can send my hdd to recover the data.

Yes. DriveSavers, for example, will do so. However, any service you find is likely to be quite expensive - $600 and up, way up. Does the drive still spin? Would it be worth the money to do it right?

my storage drive failed as well last month.

i sent it to essdatasavers and they were unable to rescue any of the data. they were the cheapest service i could find at $800. drivesavers for example wanted $2200 for the same service.

You could try to find an identical drive a swap the platters to recover the data.

But ask yourself this, is the data on there really worth even a couple hundred dollars spent on a new drive?

I think I am going to swap the platter my self. I need to search ebay and see if I can find some of these drives, setup a clean room in my basement and go to town. I am going to find some cheapo ide ones to practice on before I setup to this big boy.

Hmm... it's going to be difficult to get your air as clean as they have it in lab... Even with one of those SEPA filters (or whatever that HEPA++ standard is called).
