Is there a tool to measure storage vMotion performance/speed in real-time? All I can come up with in Google is how to figure out after the fact what the MB/s throughput was. I'd like to look at that while it's happening. Anyone know of a solution?

Hmm ..., looking at the SAN doesn't tell the whole story though since there's other traffic on those LUNs. I have no experience with SNMP so I will look into that and see what's what. I have no access to the switch though so if access is needed then this option is out.

Mentioning the switch gave me the idea to maybe look at physical NIC utilization since there are dedicated NICs for vMotion.

I am surprised that there isn't a built-in solution to monitor svMotion performance. I have done a lot of svMotion in the past week to do SAN firmware upgrades and such and it seemed to me that some of it was excruciatingly slow, far below network link and disk array capabilities.

Yeah. Look at the NIC utilization if they are dedicated. That's what I do.

you can look at the LUN, HBA, or network counters in esxtop. It won't be just svMotion but you can eyeball the difference. Keep in mind that if you're using VAAI on the same SAN your hosts aren't doing much.

VAAI will hide some bits if your host and SAN support it and it's enabled.
You could setup your vmotion network on a distributed switch and watch the counters for the vmknic.
Or you could mirror the traffic to another vm on the host and monitor the throughput.--yuck!
100% most simple is to get switch port SNMP data and just isolate svmotion traffic for a test.
