I'm lookin for a good fan for the MCX462v.

The Tornados seem to be way too loud, and as I understand it the MCX can function nearly as well with something 40-60cfm. Can somebody verify this?

Also, I'd consider going with the Tornado if its noise level could be easily reduced (I'm at the tips of my budget now, and I don't know if I can afford a fan controller [unless theres one for under 10 bucks]). I've heard about molex wire voltage switching, but I don't feel like cutting anything. Would the FAN ONLY connector on an antec truepower work to quiet a Tornado down to acceptable [30-45db] levels and still maintain good CFM [in other words, do the tornados scale well?].

Any fan guidance is very much appreciated.

I am in the same boat, I have the tornado installed and I am upgrading so I am trying to ditch the loud fan, with the old motherboard if I can and go for something quieter.

I have a Tornado on my Thermalright SP-94 (which is similar to the MCX in cooling ability). It's a 92mm 119CFM @ 56dBA. It sounds like a blowdryer, plain and simple.

I hooked it up to a fan only connector, which worked fairly nice, but when the CPU would heat up, the fan would spin faster and I it was still kinda loud.

I did a molex mod on the fan (very easy, just need tweezers, no cutting) and took it from 12v to 7v. This was still a little too loud for me, and I wasn't having any heat problems so I took it down to 5v, and it's basically silent. It went from 4900RPM to 2300RPM. I figure it puts out anywhere between 50-80CFM now. My temps are only about 3-4C higher than when it was full blast.

If you want to have the headroom, get a tornado and if it's too loud for you, hook it to a fan only connector or just mod the molex in 5 minutes.

If you just want good, silent cooling from the get-go, I'd recommend this Enermax Fan . I have it in my case and it is pretty much silent. Only $5.99 too. :)

Thanks for the awesome answer, I was thinkin of getting a Vantec Nexus fan controller. I've been tossing the idea of hooking up a fan only connector to the nexus. I could also try doing the molex mod in conjunction with the fan controller, right?

Well if you get a Fan Controller, there's no point in doing the molex mod, because basically the molex mod gives you a fixed fan speed, whereas a fan controller can let you have any speed.

If you're going to get a tornado and just slow it down with a fan controller, you're going to be spending about $30 altogether. If you get something like that enermax fan, it has a built in manual speed adjustor, and it's silent anyway.

However, fan controllers are nice (and cool i think) because you can hook all your fans to it and have everything set perfectly.
