I recently acquired a 2nd 5870 for crossfire, my first is watercooled with and mcw80 and swiftech heatsink. The 5870 heatsinks have been out of stock everywhere for some time and swiftech cant seem to give me an ETA. It seems I should be able to use mosfet heatsinks in tandem with mcw80/60s and was wondering if anyone has seen this done, I would be more than willing to do that if it cools the rest of the card adequately
 
I've seen people use those small individual ramsinks with the MCW80 and were just fine.
 
Is your second 5870 are reference model or a newer nonref one? I'm using a thermalright vrm-4 on my ref 5870 and copper sinks on the ram along an mcw-60 on the core. The thermalright vrm series cools the vrm's VERY well, passive cooled i wasn't breaking 60c in furmark. I do have pretty good case airflow but still, i was impressed. Only issue is i think they only fit the ref 5870's.
 
its reference, I can only take up the normal two expansion slots though, which is why the unisink worked so great for my first card. ramsinks would work great, but Im not sure about cooling the vrm with one

One of the versions of the vrm cooler is outside the cards, so it wouldn't interfere with any other slots. I think it'd work with your other card no problem.

the pic that sidewinder is using that is installed is actually teh vrm-4, the one i have, so don't get confused. :) You could maybe swap them and put the new card on top if the vrm cooler isn't interfering with ram or cpu cooler or tubing? Just throwing out ideas.

I think I would have some issues with tubing. Is it possible to use ramsinks on the vrm? just stick on as many as I could?

I would think so, only issue i can see is that there's not anything that i know of that will fit them very well since they're so small. I'd def go for the tallest ones with the most surface area you can get. I think maybe enzotech or someone like that make small copper sinks for mosfets that might work well on the vrm's.

Yeah those or some smaller ones, i know i've seen a smaller version that is 2pins by 2pins instead of 4x4 like the ones you linked. http://www.jab-tech.com/Enzontech-Mosfet-Heatsink-MOS-C1-pr-4112.html

Only issue could be total surface area on the small ones vs the ability to keep the larger ones attached with thermal tape. I'd probly do the larger ones if it were up to me.
 
I just pulled the trigger on a 2nd mcw80 and a bunch of mosfet and ramsinks. Ill post some pics when I put them together
 
so the sinks sucked. but performancepcs had unisinks so i picked up another one
