I'm upgrading my 8800gts to a 5850 and was wondering if anyone knows if my mcw55 waterblock will fit on it? also, are these things still ok to have naked ramchips and stuff? I don't have any ramsinks on my 8800gts and it's fine.

hopefully my storm waterblock fits on my core i5 setup too.
 
I believe that GDDR 5 uses less power than GDDR 3 so maybe not absolutely necessary, but probably still recomended. A bigger concern will probably be the voltage regulation circuitry which runs notoriously hot on newer ATI cards.
 
One thing you can do which is what I did with my 4890 and mcw60, is to take apart the stock heatsink on the 5850, take out the heatpipes and gpu plate and take the shroud off and just use the metal cover with your mcw55. I'm not sure the 5850 will come apart the same as my 4890 stock cooler did, but if it does it works great and the stock ram cooler kept my ram and vrms cooler than my full cover block on my other 4890.
 
not bad advice, i'll see if it'll work or i'll just order the swiftech heatsink that covers the rest of the card. it's only like $20 haha
 
I looked up how the 5850 heatsink is put together and as long as its the stock cooler its set up the same as the 4890 cooler, you just have to take off the shroud from the ram plate and the GPU plate and fins come out as a single piece leaving a large hole for your mcw55. If you get the 5870 it won't work as the ram plate and the gpu plate is one piece. Hope this helps.

I got mine installed with the mcw55 and ended up ordering the swiftech heatsink that is made specifically for the 5850 and their mcw water blocks. looks sweet, and hopefully keeps it cool. still in the process of OS install but i'll run a game once all that is done :D
