I want to upgrade my eheim1250 to another more powerful pump (more head). I do not, however, want to buy a noisy pump. I hear the MCP650 is emits a high pitched noise, and that the MCP655 is not too quiet either.

If I am not mistaken, the MCP600/Aquaxtreme 50z pump is almost as good as these two and is much quieter.

Is it a worthy upgrade?

Where did u hear that the MCP655 is not quiet? I bought one to replace my 650 and its a HUGE difference. Its very quiet and it lets you adjust the speed. There is a tiiiiiny bit of noise but any fan would cover that sound up.
 
Well, another thing is cost. I can probably get a used aquaxtreme 50z or MCP600 for around $50 shipped if I can find a deal. I can sell my eheim 1250 + criticool plant for at least $40 shipped, so I'll only need to spend like $10.

It just seems silly to spend like $80 (after shipping) on a pump.
 
The Aquaextreme 50z is a great pump, as is the mcp655, either one will serve you quite well.

Can the barbs on the MCP655 be removed and replaced?

If so, what thread size is it? I'd like to relplace it with something like this:

There are no barbs on the mcp655, merely the 1/2" OD fittings that are physically a part of the pump itself.
 
Well I meant those sticky-outy bits on the pump that the pipes fit on to. So they are part of the mould huh. Crap.

Yes, they are molded into the body of the 655, so no replacing them.

I had my mcp655 set @ 4 1/2 (not on purpose, I just never checked the little potentiometer) and in a closed case, it was barely audible to me. But then, I may just be going deaf, as others have said it's not silent but not loud either :rolleyes: Guess it depends on your level of noise tolerance.
