Sitting here messing with my new tv when I hear my pc get noticeably more quiet, look at the EK spin res paddle and it's stopped. Leap over to my pc and see smoke coming out of one of my pumps, immediately flipped the psu off.

Pulled the pump out of the case and there's a stain of melted plastic that was still smoking where it sat.

Only had this about 6 months. I modded it with an aftermarket top, new o-ring, and cut and sleeved the wires. Guess that probably voids any warranty?

Ah well, will be calling Swiftech tomorrow. Good thing is their office is in Long Beach only a few miles from my work.

No apparent damage to my system. Was the pump on the gpu loop. Reset cmos and booted up with no signs of any other problems, other than my gpu idle temp up 12C over normal on the desktop :(.

Pumps get hot, and aftermarket pump tops increase the power-draw, making them even hotter. Perhaps the pump electronics overheated?

Was it an XSPC aftermarket top? (not that I think that has anything to do with it - I've used XSPC as well)

That pump is generally seen as reliable. I've installed perhaps 10 of them by now (all with aftermarket tops), and some of them have been running for nearly 2 years. I do, however, ensure that the pump is not running hot... just out of habit.
 
DDC pumps run HOT and need to be properly cooled. I don't know if Swiftech will cover that since you have an aftermarket top, although I do know that they'll cover their own new aftermarket top.
 
Yes, there coming out with a new pump MCP 35X i think it is.. It has a vario on it so you can adjust the voltage and make it silent if need be. Its basicly a 3.25 pump with a voltage controller. Also comes with a custom top installed and a warrenty as long as you dont remove the new top.

Grab one of those!
 
I've got 6 3.1/350 pumps coming to me that i'm gona run in 2 XSPC tripple tops.. So i should point some fans under these pointed at the pumps then?
 
Yes XSPC black single top. This pc was my first watercooling build, the other pump has been running fine since December, with the same XSPC top put on around 6 months ago too when I went dual loops.

Had no idea about heat issues or how hot they are supposed to get. This is my first watercooling mishap.

I'll look into that new pump or a 655.
 
Why on earth would you run 3 pumps in 1 loop. Especially when you can get the king of all watercooling pumps.
